On my first trip to Northern Ontario, I learned quickly that my conception of a moose (Bullwinkle) and a moose were 2 entirely different things.

Moose meat is very tasty BTW.

Handguns are a PITA in your country and getting to Alaska via land travel with a handgun is a lesson in perceverance or a PITA.

Old thread, but I'm starting into reloading bottleneck cases. Always said that for the right price I'd buy a certain rifle; it was time to cowboy up last Saturday. I went into Bob's Sports Shop (USMCPop should know that place) and they had a Remington 700 BDL with a professional trigger job and a Redfield 3x9 scope in 25-06 for $599. I have wanted a 25-06 since Remington brought them in from the wildcat world in 1969. I have 40 Federal cartridges to empty (aka fireform) this weekend, along with a pound of H414, primers, Nosler 85 grain and a neck sizing die set on the way. I also added a Colt Commander to the stable and have been loading .45 ACP. For my use, during this powder shortage, I have found that Alliant 20/28 substitutes (by weight) for Unique.

I don't reload the 25-06 but seems like a pound is going to be a bit shy for 40 rounds isn't it? Maybe you're just trying to figure out what your favorite is tho.

a pound of H414 should be good for about 140 rounds in 25-06.

Yep, your right. I just looked at my chart. Should have looked there 1st. Don't know why for for some wild reason I was thinking 1000 grains per pound instead of 7k. Brain fart I guess.

First, if I put a pound into only 40 rounds, this would probably be my last post. Second, you are correct, I also want to try some H4831 since that is the powder that made the 25-06 but all the store had was the Short Cut version, which I didn't know was ballistically the same. I'll do about 80 rounds with the H414, then pick up some H4831 and do 20 rounds each at approximately the same velocity and see which the gun likes better and then stock up on that powder.

Load up some .17 BMG to get rid of the remaining powder.

What's the muzzle velocity, about warp 5? Looks like you could shoot that thing tomorrow and hit something yesterday.

From varmints to Cape Buffalo....the all-purpose rifle.

Barrel life might be as high as several dozen rounds. I'll shoot it if you're buyin'.

                                .17 is rather small. Get a 16.
