Cummins 5.9L.

Just a quick question on this engine. Why in the world would anyone own one when it costs three to four thousand dollars to just buy 6 new injectors. My cousin has a 07 cummins 5.9L with 229,000 miles. I just helped him install the second set of injectors. Once at 102,000 and now at 229,000. I figured it was on his part by not doing required service but he pulled out the records and quickly proved he had changed the fuel filter, drained the fuel separator according to the manufacturer specs. I called the local Dodge dealer and talked to a service guy and he said "yep sounds about right, replace them every 100,000 or so because a cylinder starts going dead hear and there".
Are you kidding me, and they wanted $1800 labor on top of the injector cost. I for sure wouldn't pay for someone to do the labor but heck i wouldn't own one if this is how much it cost to maintain a diesel pick up. Just a question to you guys...............

Everything on the new trucks is priced way high. I have a 93 Dodge with the Cummins and I put the larger POD injectors in it for like $5-600 out the door for parts and labor. Mine currently has 390,000 on it and runs like a top. With all of the electronics and smog on the newer trucks, the prices for repair has gone through the roof. A buddy of mine has an 06 Cummins and his A/C stopped working. On the older trucks it would have been a $50 part to fix it. Not on his! There are no relays or controls on his truck. Everything runs through a a control center or computer. If one item stops working, you have to replace the whole thing for about $2000 for the part. Then you have to have the dealer program it to your truck. I think I'll keep my old truck!

Yeah i dont blame you. I didnt have any problem doing the job but the dealer told him no way could i do it because im not cummings certified. I mean come on no warranty on the truck which they new. Its becoming sad if you ask me.

Your cousin should tell that dealer that you just changed out the injectors in the parking lot at a Holiday Inn Express Last Night.

A lot of people these days driving 2500's and up for sure would be just as well served driving a Isetta so if you don't need payload or towing you for sure would not understand why anybody would buy one. It pretty much mashes out to be the return on your investment. It is like saying why would anybody own a car when they can walk? It is so much cheaper.

They are not in any way shape or form comparable to a gasoline injector so you have to get that out of your head when you look at the cost. They are precision and sensitive.

It's an image thing.

We live in a "horsey" area. Certain people, when they go grocery shopping, HAVE to hook the horse trailer up, and load a horse into it. The truck HAS to be a dually, HAS to be a diesel, and HAS to have $10,000 worth of aftermarket enhancements on it. And oh yeah, it also has to be 4 wheel drive, can't go grocery shopping with 2 wheel drive, never know when you might hit a muddy spot. Don't laugh, I see this all the time.

I have a friend who once said, somebody should market plastic horse heads so everybody can stick them up in the windows of the horse trailers. Save weight, save fuel, and spare the horse from having to make a meaningless trip to the grocery store.
