  • Used propane tanks - a few questions

Yes. I've read and respect all the threads regarding safety concerns. At ease safety police. 8p

Ok. I found a 100lbs propane tank that is about to expire for an explosive deal. Two questions:

Q1. What condition can I expect on the inside of a typical cylinder? Surface rust? Flaking/pitted metal? Is the corrosion usually in the bottom like on an air tank?

Q2. When cleaning/purging tank with water etc. If I dump the spoils in the back of my 1 acre property will the smell dissapate in open air within a day or two?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

What is intended use for tank?

Just have tank recertified,,,,, It's worth about $100+ used, new they are going up around $200 in my area.... IF you purge tank and dump the fluids the amount of mercaptan oil in tank will hardly be measurable and probably not any environmental hazard...

best with a 3' or 4' cutting torch but I have done them with an 18". Hold the torch at least midway up the side of the tank because there is usually some liquid propane in the bottom of the tank. Make sure the area being heated is at least 90 degrees away from you because it is going to flare off a bit. Heat a dime-sized area on the tank and MELT a hole through the sheet metal. DO NOT squeeze the oxygen lever like you would in normal cutting torch operation. The propane gas/liquid in the tank will flare off but not explode. Let if flare off, then cut the tank as you wish.
I copied that but its how its done. Almost every other thing written about this is by smoker builders and not people that do this regular. I should take a pic when I am in town, liq oxy bottle, lp torch, 1000 lp tanks being cut up and put in double bottoms.

Unless air has been introduced into it, you should expect no corrosion at all on the inside.
