  • My first project!

This is my 2007 zx6r trackbike. It's tuned with tons of performance mods including a leo vince exhaust. I decided I needed a project before I moved on to bigger things. Figured a straight pipe would be easy enough, although very pointless lol. I hacked up the stock mid pipe since it was mandrel bent. The pipe is 5 pieces not including the brackets. I discovered how important fitment is with thin gauge tubing. Burned through quite a few spots probably due to the fitment and using .030 flux cored wire, but luckily they were fixable and I was going to grind it anyway. It's really really loud Next is paint

The subframe is tweaked from a few wrecks. not the pipe though.

You did very well, considering its flux core wire! You dove right in, and started at the top of the learning curve...Thin Metal , and tube fitment! Job well done!

Thanks Hotfoot Now I see what you guys are talking about with thin tubing fitment and technique. Way more important than I had imagined. Needless to say I'd have to practice a lot more before moving on to something structural like a roll cage. Anyone have any tipes other than perfect fitment, good technique, proper settings, and using mig? Is there some sort of copper tape that can be used on the inside of a tube to help fill in burn through spots?

How would you remove copper ring after welding?
In most cases you would need backup ring of same material as pipe that is welded and stays in place or make good welds without blowing holes.

It was probably hard to weld your muffler tube without blowing holes using fluxcore wire. Using solid wire with shielding gas MIG or TIG welding it is easy to weld without blowing holes after lots of practice. Practice until you can weld without blowing holes, slag inclusions and other defects is the trick. Welding projects such as your exhaust system is great experience that helps develop your skill.

very good point roger. didn't think about that one.

So it sounds like it's gonna be practice practice practice then. And maybe some mig is in order in the future. Good thing I have more exhaust ideas Thanks guys.
