My bike tow

Here are a few pictures of my way of towing my bikes with out a bike trailer.

The first picture is of the parts back from powder coat before final assembly.

The last two are of me towing one of my bikes.

I built this so I could would not have the need for a trailer and a place to store it.

My UnderTow project just hangs on the wall in my shop.

Neat idea, seems like you could sell those things on EBay for sure. I thought the locations in those pics looked familiar, I am originally from Titusville.

Well, that one's a lot more elaborate than the others I've seen over the years...You do remove the chain before towing, don't you??

Nope the chain stays.I have a buddy who has one.I also wondered about that...seems like if you hit a good bump it could drop in gear.

Thats Lake Washington in the pictures.

I live less than a mile from the lake. As for removing the chain, no you don't have too you just put it into neutral.

If you hit a bump bikes will not suddenly go into gear. The major problem with this is you can't backup. This thing will jack knife and you could destroy your bike or truck as well as the tow.

I have tested this out with large Harley's, Honda Gold Wing's and it tows very easy.

I have also built a small light bar that rests on the bike seat and is fully function (turn, brake, driving).

Does the back drop down to allow you to get the wheel on when you are loading?

Yes if you look at the pictures it has a small hand crank winch.

You lower it down and wheel the bike in and ratchet the front tire in, then winch up the front of the bike 6- 8 inches. Then you add locking bars to take the weight off the winch cables. Run tie downs from the handle bars to the corners of the bumper. Then your good to go.

Most States do not require lights if the tow vehicles lights are visible but I built a set that goes on the bike and you plug into you vehicle.

I have ideas to simplify the design and make it lighter. Right now the entire tow is 39 pounds.

This design came about from a friend at work who has a VW camper van and wanted to go on vacation and bring his Harley. The VW van would not pull a trailer very well thru the mountains when it's loaded and with two adults.

He asked me to come up with a way to take his bike with them. so I designed my UnderTow for motorcycles.

I used the dimensions of a Harley fat boy front tire and went from there.

My friend had to install new shocks and a 2" reciever on the back of the VW to take the tounge weight of the Harley. But he said it towed easy and it worked great.

They kept the VW parked and rode around on the Harley.

My tow lights

Here are the pictures of the light bar I built and powder coated to go with the the bike tow.

The light bar sits on the seat of the bike being towed and I use bungee cords to attach it to the seat.

The light bar is a fully functional set of lights (turn, stop, driving).

Great job. I had similar tow device for 200CC Vespa.
