  • Bad Distributor ,,,, Maybe ?

    Hi!
I seem to always get good input on cars here.
Wifes dearly beloved '93' Honda Accord has a flutter.

A little flutter @ about 1800 rpm, and a significant flutter,
    @ about 2800 rpm.

I'm think'n distributor.......doesn't seem to be load (vacume) related.
More pronounced once fully warmed up. And rich injection is over.

    Got any advice ??
    Thanks

    VG

    PS
Not sure what 4 cylinder it has , but it's got loads of GO,
    when you need it.

if it is the standard 4 cylinder and not a v-tec

seem to remember there was something between the cam and the distributor that could go bad.

When was the last timing belt installed?...if it needs one then make sure the tensioner is inspected as well as a water pump for good measures.....or it could simply be plug wires.....start the car up at night and raise the hood with no lights on and watch for the lightening storm... if you see on them it's definitely time for wires..... but it would be worse under load so probably not it but a quick check still

No it's not worce under load.
I fear you make perfect sence.
Like chain-slap hence it only flutters @ certain rpms.

Not my favorite repair in november.
        Thanks Muchly.

First off, I know nothing about Hondas, but if it were a Jeep, I'd say it's time for a new throttle position sensor.

I am sure there is a Honda forum similar to this one, I use them on some cars I have.

Go to www.honda-tech.com What you are describing is a common issue usually related to plugged ports in the exhaust gas recirculation passages. Look under the FAQs for Accord EGR Port cleaning.

Not that difficult - essentially pull 4 plugs using a home made slide hammer (Read self tapping screw welded to end of carriage bolt) and clean out the ports with a wire and compressed air. Took about an hour - problem solved.

Course - could be something else - but this is common.

I had a similar problem with my 02 accord about 6 months ago. One of my spark plug had a very small crack on the ceramic part. Cured the problem after I replaced that plug.

Can't thank you all enough for your cincere Input.

                      BUT:
I'm not going to fight with this on thanksgiving week-end,
which incidently is our 29th aniverserary as well.

ADMITTEDLY: I opened the hood and my mind slammed shut.
If any of you can expand on this EGR stuff.
I will be in debt, like on the god-father movie.
Call me in the midst of your worst night-mare.
I will help you sort out the thing.

Here are both posted & hosted pics of the engine compartment.
I don't see anything that whispers only an hour here.??

If you can find the time to paint the pics with arrows shot into the culprit,
I will be your servant in the future, when the unfixable occures.
Remember the 318 the 429 the 283 I'm still back there, intellectually.

Thanks and have some good R&R.
Monday starts up 70 hour weeks not including drive-time.
I know what yer think'N , "he'll be able to pay to have it fixed".
BUT then I will have learned?......... naught ZerO!

                      Thanks

Some auto parts store can do a free use of their scanner to give you the problem code. Should help you in pinpointing or giving you a clue on the problem. Mine had a misfire on cylinder 2 code which led me to the bad plug.
