I want to add a damper to my Fireplace insert, but do not know type of steel to use to lengthen the center rod on the damper. (I was thinking of using a 1/8" electric welding rod)
I also need to know if I can braze the center rod onto the cast iron damper to keep it from rotating on the center rod.
    Thanks again.

This is a standard 8" cast iron stove pipe damper. Also what would you recomend to use to lengthen the center rod.

The damper I have seen have removable rod retained in damper flap by nail, rivit, cotter pin, screw or somthing. The rod is inserted through one stove pipe wall, damper and pipe wall on other side. Retainer is inserted through damper and rod.

Mild steel rod is what you want new or welded to old.

Terry, 310 or 309 stainless will hold up to the heat. Brazing will probably hold up for awhile, if you had a chimney fire, all bets are off.
