cheap square tube in KY????

I'm just getting ready to start a locost kit car build and I'm trying to find some 1x1x1/16 square tubing around Ky.I have yet to find any type of salvage yard with any in stock. The only place I found near me was MetalSupermarkets and they wanted 1.14 a foot. This price kills the locost idea. The plain electrowelded tube would work fine for me. Heck, I don't even need any lengths longer than about 40". I've searched all over the net and found great deals everywhere but here. Just wondering if any one knows about any great deals out there. I did find on this list the place in Madil Oklahoma, that has great prices but I'll have to find out about the shipping costs. I'll need at least 100' of just 1x1 and I'm afraid the shipping will be ridiculous.

I purchased about 50' of 1 1/2" square tubing for 20 cents a pound. 100 lbs = $20.00. This was from First Street Recycling Inc, 1321 East 1st Street, Dayton, Ohio 45403, number: 937-223-7231.

I have been buying all my scrap metal from here, just found this place about 3 months ago, and they have an excilent selection. I have no idea, if they ship or not. I have not even looked at there new steel prices except for bying 10' foot leght of 1/4" round stock for about $3.20. Which for new was a great price, I think?

Ditto on First Street Recycling - good folks, decent prices. If you are in the Dayton area it is worthwhile just to go and look in the scrap bins. For those of you who have been to Patternson Iron and Metal 10-20 years ago - its the same place only cleaned up and organized.

tubing quest

Try checking some local weld fab shops. I found one that had all kinds of goodies left over from specialty jobs he had done. He even let me go thru his scrap dumpster and take all I wanted for free!!! I know not everyone will be like this one but you never know until you ask.

I buy most of my steel from a big welding shop. they sell it to me by weight as scrap.

Don't know how things are in Kentucky, but here in Southern Oklahoma, there are a lot of trailer manufacturers (horse, utility, etc). Most of them sell offcuts of the tubing that are usually 4-5 ft long. Various sizes and wall thickness. You might give it a try.
