  • Need ideas for sliding gate

I need you guys to pick your brains and give me some tips on building a sliding/rolling gate. The opening is approx 24' and I plan on using either 1 1/4 or 1 1/2" square tubing and cattle panel. I've built alot of regular swing gates but this is my first slider. I'd like to see some pics, if ya gottem. Gate hgt is 4', thanks

is it a situation where you could put a track on the ground or would you need to use rollers on the bottom of the gate ?

Ken, I think you need a trolley system along the top. Should be able to find components at any good farm & ranch or fence company.

        gate

With 2 extra posts you could mount 4 rollers off to the side and extend your top an bottom frame twice the width + the roll spacing and it will roll without top or bottom rails interfering with the opening

OK, I fired up my new autocad system "Aaron 2.0" and whipped out the sketch on how to do a sliding gate without an overhead gantry.
2 rollers are mounted at the back of the gate, and run inside the fence horizonatls. 2 rollers are mounted on the fence, and run on the outside top & bottom of the gate.
The rollers are about 8" diameter, and are available at fence suppliers.
Sorry about the colors, the markers that came with the software are sort of dried up.

            slide gates

            Ken,

I work at a steel mill and all our access gates (when unattended) use card activated slide gates.. slide your access card thru the reader and it turns on the motor that runs the chain that connects to the gate..etc...

these gates are either double or single with readers on each side so if it's double only one side will open when actuated... and the gate opening is at least 15' wide...some wider... they use a rack made of pipe that mounts to the fence.. a set of rollers ( top and bottom) ride this tubing rack to keep the gate plumb and square.. the gate frame itself is twice as long as the opening so it is supported in the closed position... hard to explain... easy to understand with a picture... they work very well with some maintenance (greasing/cleaning) but you can imagine the number of times they open a day 24/7 and the environment in a steel mill.

I'll take my digital camera tomorrow and snap some pics of the gate and its rack... don't guess you plan to use the actuators and such... it's just a two way chain operated motor opener. I'll try to get them posted Friday.. I'm out of town for the weekend..

maybe you can get some ideas from the pics...hope so
