Remote current control
Well I thought about it over the weekend Rock, and I am still interested in the remote for the Champ.. What is involved? Are you talking about extending the wires on the built in dial, or something more extensive? It should be possible to build the rheostat into a pedal mechanism. The Manual says it is a 10 ohm 100 watt rheostat. What level of voltage and current is on this?

HI WILL................... PRETTY MUCH LIKE FRANK SAID.........MANY PEOPLE HAVE DONE IT BEFORE...........THIS ONLY WORKS FOR THE NON PC BOARD DESIGNED ONES.......... YOUR GOING TO USE A RHEOSTAE OF THE SAME VALUE AS THE ONE IN THE MACHINE. THE TOGGLE SWITCH TAKES THE RHEOSTATE ON THE FRONT PANEL OUT OF THE CIRCUIT AND TRANSFERE'S IT TO THE ONE IN THE REMOTE CONTROL BOX............LET'S SAY OUT THERE ABOUT 50 FEET..........ALL WE ARE DOING IS CHANGEING FROM THE FRONT PANEL (YOUR CURRENT RHEOSTATE) TO THE REMOTE ONE IN THE CONTROL BOX..............THE TOGGLE SWITCH IS THE ONE THAT TAKES IT OUT OF THE CIRCUIT..............AS I RECALL THE 18 GAUGE WIRE WILL GET YOU TO 50 FEET WITHOUT A SIGNIFICANT VOLTAGE DROP...........THAT IS AS FAR AS I WOULD GO WITH THE EXTENSION............MUCH FURTHER THAN THAT, THEN RESISTANCE OF THE BIGGER WIRE COMES INTO PLAY AND I DON'T THINK THEM OF MUCH USE AFTER 50 FEET.............THAT IS MY PERSONAL OPINION ONLY.....................SO YOU CAN SEE THAT MANY HAVE DONE IT BEFORE YOU AND BECAUSE OTHER'S KNOW HOW TO DO IT ALSO TAKES THE LIABILITY ISSUE OFF OF ME.............HAVE YOUR LOCAL ELECTRICIAN OR WELDER REPAIR TECHNICAN DO THIS FOR YOU...................BE SAFE NOW.............ROCK[email protected]

It looks like it would be easy to add a connector and switch in the plugged holes that are shown in the attached pic. The foot pedal may be a little harder to fabricate, but it should be possible to fab up a foot pedal that turns the rheostat.....anyone got an old foot pedal they want to get rid of?Thanks Rock. I'll let you know how it goes.

Champion 16 remote
Will,
Nice set up with your trailer!
Frank,
Can I talk you out of a little more detail?
1. Size and description of rheostat?
2. When you refer to face plate, is this the welder control panel?
3. What is SW?
4. Side panel is side of welder adjacent to control panel?
More detail would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Rock...You said that you don't offer a remote for the Champ 16 "anymore". Does that mean that Hobart once sold one??? What was the model number, and can I get a copy of the manual for it? Maybe I can find a used one on the market somewhere.
Thanks
Dave, I think Frank's SW was SWitch. Thanks for the comment on the trailer....Not a lot of work...just bolted it down. No more than a couple of hours into the cable hangers paint and all. I am going to take the sheetmetal off the champ today to see what I am getting into and whether the rheostat is mounted on a PC board or not. I'll post some pics of the inside of it.
