Anyone know of any projects I can use to help teach my sons how to mig weld?
Webpages or books would be nice. I have a 13 & 17 year old sons that finally see the fun in welding. They have run the fundamental weld joints. I am satisified they are safe and have sufficient skill to make something that they can call their own. I'm not looking for trailers, log splitter or any farm impliments. I'm in need of projects that can be complete in 1 day or within a few hours.

    Thanks!

Don't have any websites but have a couple of ideas.

Are they into skate boards at all? My son(15) is wanting to make a "grind rail".

    Mailbox post
    Book ends
    Shelf brackets

Do you have plasma or o/a cutting capabilities in your shop? They could sketch their name on sheetmetal and cut it out. Weld a hanger on the back or weld it to a base.

Give them some old bolts, washers and nuts and let them tack it together to look like a man, dog, monster, motorcycle or what ever they want.

      No skateboarders here

I do have o/a, but don't know if I want the 13 yo to get too friendly with that yet!!!

I have thought of the "boltman/woman/family" as a project and will probably let them do this one!!!

      Thanks for the input!!!

If you have a bender, you can have them bend the letters for their name from some 1/8 round. Some letters consist of multiple parts that need to be welded together. Then weld the letters to a piece of 3/4 flat stock, sand , paint and put it on the molding above their door.

I just did this to practice with my new HF compact bender. My son's loved them and the little girl across the street wants me to make her one. I might see if my oldest son wants to do it for her.

If you have the HF compact bender the measurments/bends for each letter are in the back of the manual.

If you don't let me know and I'll scan mine and email them to you.

JHSMITH..........I had my son make ME some book ends once out of 1/2 inch plate.......... Why 1/2 inch plate you say....because I made him do multiple passes over the root pass..........then weld a 45 gusset plate to the 90.................. He was 15 and we were getting ready to start on his Camero 1969..........

I still have those Heavy book ends today.......... Still on the book shelf holding up books..............

Just a thought but if they've already done some butt, joint, etc........ Well to this day my son still grins when he see's the Book ends.......... ....And he learned something along the way also...............Enjoy the teaching process................Rock.....

From what I have seen a lot of beginning weldor's first project is a welding table. That was the first thing my son and I made. My son then began working on a grind rail for skateboarding as was also suggested above. We also race go-karts so I am making some simple stands for the scales out of some angle iron. So my suggestion would be to consider their hobbies and see what they could make for them. As far as plans, my son measured a friend's grind rail and went by that.

Boy that brings back memories...... I still have the scars from all the stitches I got from those years and my ankles still arent right from all the sprains. All from skateboarding......

Did he also build you a metal book shelf to hold these puppies?

Sounds like a great project, maybe I'll scale it back to a smaller plate!

                  Thanks Again!

I've got a welding table already. But I should consider their hobbies. I should be able to come up with a few projects from this!

                    Thanks!

                            Hi,

This site has some kid specific projects and some general projects for beginners. His equipment is the wrong color though.
