here we go ....got a hub in off a massey-harris tractor...guy wants it welded cuz he was alittle rough with the hammer in the removal of it ....so heres the deal ...the break is a half moon shape out of the hub ...the break also passes through a threaded bolt hole ....now what i was wondering does anyone have a trick for welding this with out having to violate the threaded hole....just looking for away so i don't have to redrill the hole and thread it ....going to put it in the oven in garage so it will be up to temp in morning...so if anyone has an idea sound off i would like to try it ...

Hi boilerman. What I would do is stick a copper rod of the correct diameter in the hole and weld it up. The copper will come out, but you will still have to rethread. You might try a copper bolt already threaded but I think the threads would be to thin to hold up.

You can thread a piece of carbon, and gently screw it into the tapped hole like it is a bolt, and then weld right up to it. Carbon has the unique property of being an element that shrinks when heated, rather than grows, so you will wind up with slightly undersized tapped holes where you weld up to the carbon.
After thorough cooling, chip the carbon out, and run a tap in to clean up the threads.
With a little learning, you can weld up a threaded hole using this technique. Only problem is machining the carbon is a pain in the *** and dirty. BTW, don't even think of reusing the carbon, it crumbles after one use.
