What kind of welding curtains do you all use? Am asking because I have some younger kids next door and since I do some welding outside I think I need something to shield them (I have a Lincoln buzz box). Had thought about corragated metal on some 2ft x 5ft pipe frames I have or the yellow vinyl that actually made for the purpose. Would even use it indoor, so I would have to make it moveable. Well, thanks in advance. Tom

well you could teach them the lesson on why ya don't look at someone welding with out a hood on. If they were across the street then I don't think it would hurt them. If they come up to you to see what you are doing then they might have some sore eyes later that night.Art is dangerous!

If you won't be too embarrased, you can just go over to the local JoAnn Fabric store, and buy yourself some heavy cottin canvis. Sew up some hems (wife comes in handy here) and add eyelets.
Cottin doesn't burn or light off too easily, and it's cheap.

Speaking of welding curtains and children and other spectators...
Don't forget your pets. I was welding last summer when I realized I had not put my dog back in the house first. I can only hope she didn't find my welding very interesting to watch... She didn't act like her eyes hurt that night, but it taught me a lesson.Bill C

That's a good point you brought out, Bill...Being a dog breeder, I know that dogs eyes have the ability to amplify light, so they can see in the dark. If you worry that you have flashed your dog, the symptoms would be blinking more than usual and have watery eyes. You may also see the whites of their eyes bloodshot, however that can also be caused by a number of other things, too. The damage to the eye is the cornea gets burned, and rarely would you see damage to the retina. It is the same with humans, too.

I was doing a job for a friend and he has this thing about cats ( he likes them) well any how he had about 18 cats in the building 40x20 is the size where i was welding .....well one wanted to be my friend in the worst way ....would climb up me like i was a tree and sit on my shoulder while i was welding (and would watch) after about 3 times of putting the cat down and him climbing back up i figured o.k. you got to learn the hard way and left him there to watch for about 30 minutes of welding...well i thought that cat will never see at night again but to all of ower surpise it seemed to never affect the cat ...go figure that...but in the end he did figure that sleeping under a ford was a bad ideaI don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it

Tom,
I had a similar concern. See attached. I used 3/4" EMT with angle for feet. Need more weight on feet if it's breezy or use longer angle pieces. Also works as wind screen.

i had the same concerns also. i invited the kids over to watch, taking turns thru my extra helmet. once they saw it it lost some of the appeal, tho the oldest one wanted to try so i let him run some beads. my idea only works if the kids are old enough to understand safety issues so give it a try.
