  • Need grill/smoker plans for new welder

Hello everyone! I've been reading this board for some time now but just joined today. I just purchased a MM 175 and have been practicing day and night. Very nice compared to my old hand-me-down stick welder. I want to build a BBQ Grill and/or Smoker but need plans. I could wing it, but I figure why not get it right the first time. This board seems to have a wealth of knowledge. Please let me know if you have any good plans or just email them to me. Thanks.

      Peeler, welcome aboard.
To build a grill, on this forum at least, you'll need a large propane tank, a piano, and a few tools. It will help if you have a very understanding wife too.

Jack, I been meaning to ask, for a fellow who's picture seems remarkibly to resemble Hank Hill, how can you recommend anything other than a propane burning grill?

well ya know Franz ... that while Hank is an avid salesman and consumer of 'propane and propane accessories' , he's still a good salesman and points out the other choices for potential propane customers. Much like Rock does here with the red and yellow colored welding machines. That said if peeler does much research at all I'm sure he'll come to his senses and build a propane powered grill which would make Hank Hill proud ... lol

Might be worth checking out all of your local BBQ stores with a tape measure and pad of paper. Look at the design features that you want/ don't want. Also, check the available sizes and possibilities of components- burners, grills, valves and brackets. Some stuff is cheaper to buy than to build, like 1/4" or 3/8" stainless rod, cut and welded into a grill vs. a ready made, ceramic coated steel grill.
I'm still daydreaming about a horizontal smoker with propane burners in the smoke chamber to start the hardwood burning, and in the main chamber, so i can use it as a conventional BBQ.
Check out the scrap yards in your area, chances are you'll find what you need for less.
Good luck, and post pics of your creations.

            flashblind,

That's funny you mention that. I was quickly smoking some ribs on my gas grill last night, and then finishing them in the oven. I have a little wood chip box I welded up to put chips on the propane grill. I had the same thought about a propane powered smoker. I think having burners in the main smoking unit too would be nice for searing, keeping the temp. steady and of course grilling.

I went round & round with that **** Brinkman smoker and finally got rid of it. So now it's time design a real smoker that can steam, smoke and basically cook meat properly.

I've checked out the big smokers outside our local grocery store and they have propane burners in the wood smoker boxes to simplify lighting a pile of hardwood. I figure to add the same concept to at least one side of the main chamber for conventional BBQ operations as well as searing leaner cuts before smoking. By Labor day, all the home store BBQ parts will be on clearance and I'll be piecing it together. I'm still looking for the right (About 24") pipe or tube for the chambers. Time to go to the scrap yard. Projects are more fun when I can create anew from pieces of old. Good luck to all in their BBQ efforts- It's not a sport, it's a way of life.

Ya, projects are more fun when they don't cost as much as buying a NEW one too!
