Silhouettes cut out with benefit of darkroom photo enlarger

I always had the desire to do some type of artistic metal work, but felt I really lacked the skill to do so... I used to do my own black and white darkroom work and have an enlarger that has been essentially unused in the last 30 years..

I got the idea to mount the enlarger over my welding table and found some sillouettes I like and printed them on transparencies sized to make a "negative" for my enlarger... Used the enlarger at night and an aluminum color marking pen to transfer the images onto some scrap steel.... then cut the patterns into it using my newly acquired plasma cutter...

Using the plasma freehand gives the ability to add a lot more artistic detail, for example the silhouette of the bird had very little detail of the feathers, just had overall outline... so I just kept adding the feather detail one by one..

Cut through from the clean side of the metal to the dirty with the plasma set to leave some "artistic" edges on the cuts... The old tar coating, dirt, rust makes a nice surface that has held up well.. I did these about 3 years ago.. just now posting...

The shot of my welding table with the enlarger covered up by the plastic bag is not a real good pic for showing the enlarger, but I'm sure you get the idea...

Pair of Cranes -- the bird kind!

Made this for someone's retirement gift. Stands about 5 1/2 feet tall. No finish other than "instant rust" as it is planned for an outside location. Cattails are 1/4" rod with I think 3/4" black iron pipe -- bits of rod stuck in the ends, then migged to death to fill in and then rounded off with flap disk. Dragonfly's are a lag bolt with wings -- brazing material to add some highlights.

Yep just used mild steel for all of it. The Sundials were however made with Hotrolled because that is what was given to me at the scrap yard where I get my material for home projects. I also got the O2 Tank from there as well. Thanks for the comments I enjoy doing this stuff.

    water jet

Water Jet. Sweet. I saw your other post, and that answered my question on how. Did you use mild steel for all those projects?

The bi-planes are sweet. Gotta love that water jet, huh?

    Materials

Sundial is nice. What are the materials, and what did you use to cut the scrolls with the very thin kerf at the bottom? CNC Plasma?

    Nice job

This is what I did today

I made the Gong from a discarded O2 tank. The Comedy/Tragedy is for my daughter who is in Theater and the Sundial is for my wife that saw one and wanted me to make one. All three were done in about 10 hours today.

    New to the boards.

Came to the Hobart site because I am looking at replacing my old Hobart. Found this forum so figured I would post a few pics. Having access to a Waterjet cutter is nice.

Here is a link to my facebook album with some various pics of some equipment and projects. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?ai...6&l=ffe20c776d
