It took a couple of hours...you start with a bunch of titanium scrap, then melt it onto an aluminum plate, all done inside an inert atmosphere chamber. It gets pretty hot in there.
Hey, Caldwell...I tried a gong within a gong...but mine was about 4 feet long, and both were the same lenght...they cancelled each other out...soundwaves killed each other....does yours work OK??
Everything but the blade, I bought that, it's an Angus Trim blade. (though I did chemical gunblue it!)
The guard I made from two small 1/8" plates, 3/8", 1/4" and 1/8" roundbar. I welded it with self shielded wire and cleaned down the welds as best I could, then chemical blued it.
The handle I built out of 6 different pieces of steel, welded together with solid wire. Once this was done, the welds were ground flush and I filed two groves on the surface on the center of the handle by hand! Chemical blued again.
I shaped the pommel from a chunk of plate, then drilled and tapped it. And more Chemical gunblue.
End to end, it's about 48 1/2" long
Pictures! They're fairly large, so I'm posting links to them!
Clean any oil or whatnot off, give it a quick buff with some steel wool and apply with a sponge. Remove the excess/dried on residue with hot water and dry off, then give it a light buff with fine steel wool.

The inside gong also has a golf ball "clanger" inside. The sound is OK and pleasant enough, but not as clear as a straight one gong gong. It sort of depends on action. If the inside gong strikes the outside, it sounds pretty nice, but if a the same time the clanger hits the inside -- well its not the best sound but not as annoying as fingernails on a chalkboard -- just too much going on I think.
I do like the easy "wind action" as the inside gong moves pretty easy and makes some nice sound in a gentle wind.
The back of the helmet I didn't built, but the visor I did. The helmet was built off a sallet, for what it means. It was "fun" to say the least, getting holes to line up for rivets and what not. It's a wonder why I decided to weld the throat protection on! Gunblued again. I built them back in my "rapier fencing" days, but I think they constitute art! Nothing else like em!
