  • Power Hacksaw?

Ya'll ever seen anything like this?

I already have a cheapo 14" chopsaw (HF of course!!), but it looked like it may kinda sorta do what a bandsaw would do.

Any idea what its worth? It's local to me, so im game!

    Thanks!

I've got it's big and little brothers, and they are both worth a lot more than a chop saw in my book, cause they work cutting while I do other things. They also don't carmelize steel the way a chop saw does.
Auction prices will run anyplace from $25 on up to a couple hundred for a 6" capacity machine with oil pump cooling.
They ain't worth squatt on thin wall tubing, unless you can nurse it thru cause the saw blade will loose teeth.
A good one has a hydraulic setup to lift the blade on the backstroke, and is worth more money.

I'm using a similiar sized Jet hacksaw. Works fine except make sure the vise is good and tight or you'll need extra blades, not that I have any first hand experience or course.

It can cut 3" of hydraulic cylinder rod given enough time.

I used to have a dayton brand power hacksaw, got it from my great g'pas estate when I was 14, last year I bought a HF bandsaw and donated the power hacksaw to the local high school metalshop. it never failed me and is still in use cutting 3" aluminum blanks for plumb bobs

the responce I got was that it was cheaper then brass and thats all that was left from last years metal and they wern't getting much new stuff because of budget cuts. they couldnt even afford to buy a 50 lb can of rod but I was nice and gave them 2 cans of 6013 that I wasnt using

Ain't it an interesting statement on educational values when a school can't afford to buy material for kids who want to learn a trade, but can afford all kinds of money for feel good programs.
Be happy your district is interested in accepting donations, here they just cancell programs like that, so they can spend more on all day babysitting.

Man I hate to get off in a rant here but I must. This just has been pissing me off for a good 2 weeks now! I was over a buddys of mine. His grand kid came around. he lives next door to gramps there. He is in hight school and is taking metals. He built a skate board thing a ma bob ( ) in metals. Welds looked VERY bad! I asked him what rod he used?? Poor kid had no clue on what rods to use when let alone how to "weld " with them. Im sorry but when I was in hight school I took metals and woods. I rember in woods class some guy made something and was taking it home. The teacher said he was ashamed to see him leave the class room with that project!!! Now this poor kid is in the same high school and thay dont teach the kids nothing! Myself felt bad for fireing a few questions at the young lad not knowing I was going ot make him look like a fool. Its not his falt the teacher does not teach But come one if your going to teach a class like that and the kid / kids whant to learn it teach teach them!

I told the lad if he liked to this summer and in the fall he could come up to the farm here and I would give him some learing! if the teachers wont teach his grand son I'll show the lad how to weld. Thats for sure!

Sorry that is just something that been bugging me for a bit and it is still bugging me!

I can recall we had one of these in the shop at one point, I think my Dad traded it for something else.

The noise is the killer with this machine, yea nice cuts but boy the noise sounds like a loom running.

and yes the quality of edjumication in public schools is pitifull around here. They have a "deicent" shop but the teachers are lacking..... they have 3 big motor-generator welders 2 hobart & 1 miller (what I learned on) 2 deicent sized bridgeport mills but there was barely enough tooling to use one at a time, and 2 floor lathes. the best machine in the whole place was the 12x48 surface grinder .

anyways the price is right on that machine, I'd buy it
