Baker's rack and landscape Rake

Just a few projects I have been working on. I also have a top secret project in progress. I will show it when it is completed.

First picture is a big baker's rack that is ready for the cabinet guy to add a main shelf with some drawers under neath. I did some metal work for him so we are trading out work.

this next picture is a landscape rake that my neighbor Earl wanted me to build. This is to rake out all of the crap after we till up the ground. Earl doesn't know why I need to put scrolls on everything. I just had to add a scroll and a finial just for him.

here is an action shot of the rake with Earl on his tractor.


We need to add some weight to the rake head. Earl wants some longer teeth. It is kind of fun to stand on it and be pulled around by the tractor.

ChadRat I wish I had your talent at this. I would like to do stuff with scroll work and rings but I think it requires alot more patience than I am capable of..))) Projects look great and very professionlly done....nice work.

do you just start with a size and basic shape and then add the ornamental elements or do you have a comeplete sketch/drawing before you start creating.

How do you figure the size of scroll you want...do you take into consideration the attach points to determine the length, and diameters of the scroll? Do you have formulas you work with? Or is it just experiential guess work? (Artistic Talent)

Is that a HF bender or a Shop outfitters? Inquiring minds want to know You are a magician with that stuff!

Nice, I got one of the HF benders and have played around with it never got into it like you.

I also got that useless scroll attatchment for it and have never had any luck with it. Do you have this attachment and if you do how in the world do you use it?

I have the HF compact bender with the scroller and I have the HF 36131 metal craft knock off. I used the 36131 for the scrolls and the twists on the baker's rack.

I don't use plans or sketches. I just work with dimensions. I just see it as a space I need to fill. I use to make up plans but my stuff never turned out like the plan so why bother? On the rack, I started out by making the frame out of 1" square tubing. Next, I added the front legs. I put in the shelves and then made the scrolls to atach to the shelves. Then I added the background thing and the finials.

To determine the scroll length, I will take a measurement from where the scroll will go. To figure out the length, I know that the small scroll takes 5" of metal and I forget what the big scroll is, say around 15". So to get a 2' scroll add 20" and cut your metal at 44". I don't always get it right. If I am really off I will measure the scroll I made. If I need it longer then I willadd to it and make a new one. I can always find a use for a scroll so screwing up just adds to the stock. Plus flat metal is cheap. If it is too long then I will put it back in the scroller and bend it a lil more. If I am close but not exact then I will bend the scroll in or out by hand to get it just right.

To use the HF scroller on the compact bender, Put the scroller in the center hole. For small scrolls, I put the lil roller thing in the third hold from the center. Big scrolls I use hole 6. Line up the place where the metal sits in the scroller with the roller thing. I like using 1/8" thick metal because it bends easy but for a leg or something I would use 3/16" thick. When I work with 1/8" I put a lil piece of cardboard or aluminum in the scoller part to help hold the metal. If you stand behind the bender with the center hole is the far hole. Slide the metal in and put the metal on the left slide of the roller. Then just crank it counter clock wise until ya get the scroll you want. I like the HF 36131 bender for scrolls. There is a lil clamp to help hold the metal. I will get some pictures on how I set things up.

Rock, I am sure if you made some scrolls and put them close together and welded them up then you would have a piece of art. I bet it would be abstract but it would still be art.

i have the Shop Outfitter scroll bender. i like it because it has letters that corespond to a set of templates they also sell. the letters on the scroll bender make it real easy to duplicate multiple scrolls of the same size. all you do is crank til the metal touches the letter and your done.
