  • Need Drill Bit Recommendations...

Just as the subject states, I need some recommendations on where to get some decent quality drill bits.

I don't want any cheap crap, yet I also don't want to break my wallet. I got a nice drill press and I'm scrounging and barely making it by with pieces of old drill bit sets. I want a full set that I can take care of and keep next to my drill press..

    Any help would be appreciated.

    My vote is Hanson.

I bought a set 20+ years ago and the only dropouts are from my own stupidity.

    I have re-sharpened a few ... sometimes I get it right, sometimes I don't.

All bits will last longer if you use oil (any old oil is better than dry, there are special cutting oils).

Right here on the electronic mall.

I did a google search on Hanson drill bits, 3600 hits, for instance

You may want to shop some for price and the range of sizes you need. Also, you may want to wait a bit for other opinions in response to your post.

You got my 2 cents worth.

        always use a lubricant

walter, norseman, dormer to name a few are good quality drill sets. spend a little more on the good stuff......it's worth it. DO NOT BUY FROM HOME DEPOT! buy a drill doctor or ask a machinist friend to teach you how to sharpen them, but it does take skill and practice to do well. different metals, different grinds, etc.

I had a similar set but ruined them trying to sharpen them by hand before i got my drill doctor. They worked for a while, some of those bigger bits will run you over $30 a piece so an entire set for that price tells you something.

Believe it or not,i have had very good luck with 2 sets i bought at TSC,i believe they are Miboro,Mibaro?something like that, anyways i bought a small set up to 3/8 and then a big set up to around 3/4.Combined with the drill doctor these have been very good relativly cheap bits.

As far as lubricants,i hace tried a bunch but nothing compares to this bottle my dealer gave me to try,it's called Tapmatic,it runs for around $10 a bottle and you only use a few drops, very impressive stuff.

I checked out that site. They have an awful lot of Harbor Freight looking tools and equipment, except they are a lot higher in price. They have a Portal Cable 12v Drill/Driver at reg. price of $198, on sale for $99. Normally, these are refurbished units. Problem is, you can buy their 14.4v dril/driver, brand new with case and two batteries, all over town for $129, so I don't trust their price on the 12v. Everything they sell, is plus shipping. At least with Harbor Freight, anything over $50.00 is shipped free, no matter how much it weighs. I'd spend a little more dough and get a reputable brand name set. Check out Grainger, every once in a while they have special sales, and when they do, the prices are outstanding. We maintain an account with them just for this reason.

                    Thanks for the replies guys....

I think I am going to go for this set here....

                    Hansen - Silver & Deming 8 pc set. $192.70

This will satisfy my large diameter needs, and then I'll get a standard set thats $65 and goes up to 1/2".

Any comments, opinions, suggestions on my plans?

That's a fine company with an outstanding reputation. I think you'll be happy with both sets for many years to come. Sounds like a plan!

Goto McMaster-Carr and read about drill bits - I use aircraft jobbers.
also check Enco.com before you buy anything

                        That Hanson set is pricey

Yeah, I haven't bought a thing yet so I appreciate the reply.

I did actually checkout Enco's site, which is http://www.use-enco.com

They had some very well priced sets in there. Specifically here....

                            drills

the material you're drilling/rpm matters alot.
Sharp bits are essential - drill doctor 750 pro works well - for the price - cheaper than replacing the bits [only sharpens up to 3/4" dia]
don't bother unless you have coolant

I'm not a drill press pro by any means. For cutting oil, I bought the dark cutting oil at Home Depot. Will this be any good? Obviously it should be better than spraying with WD40, like I used to do when using the hand drill.
