  • New Truck Rack

This picture is just getting started with basic structure. The four peices hanging off the frame are the curved pads that will sit on the outside edge of the truck cap.

From the front with the rails finished. The cross bar that runs across half of the back was later removed.

Completed in primer. The bracket across the back on the side without the expanded [flat] metal is for a roller as that side of the rack is for my folding boat.

Paint finished, rack mounted on truck. The yellow band on the front is a ratchet tie down to secure the boat.

                  New Truck Rack

With Boat in place. If I knew how to put all the pictures on one poat it would have saved time. However, having said that this is the last post. I used a HH135, C25, and .023 or .030 wire. Also I did use some flux core if the wind came up here. The wire was Weldit and for the most part I used the reccomended settings. The rack is made of 1" 16ga, 1X1-1/2 16ga, and #9 expanded metal. It is 10' long and 50" wide. It weights about 90 lbs and is very rigid. I will be working on 3-1/2 foot quick release extentions for the front and back to carry 20 footers as needed. Took me about two weeks, and is my first major project. Next up will be a O/B motor caddy for my 4hp Johnson that powers the boat. BTY, without the knowledge I gleaned from this board I don't think I could have done this...so, thanks guys
                  Regards, George

                    nice work.

from the first couple of pics with no truck in sight I thought you were gonna mount the rack on the Volvo or the Bmmer. that would have been unique !

                      Morph,
I was thinking the same thing.

                      What is under the cover?

Looks like it turned out well. I have never seen a folding boat before. Nice job on the rack.

I was thinking about building a rack to haul 20 footers then I realized I would have to have a place to store them or cut them in half when I got home. I could probably store them but I would have to move some stuff around first.

WOW....excellent project. Looks very professional to me. I need to build something for my Toyota Tucoma P/U. It's leased so I want to keep from drilling a lot of holes. And I need to be able to take in on and off easily.

                        Thanks for sharing.

                          ChadRat,

The Volvo belongs to my wife, and she won't even let me ride in it. The Bimmer is a convert and it would look really strange with any kind of a rack. Whats under the cover, well the one next to the driveway has a 1978 VW Convertible triple white thats getting restored. There is a 1978 VW black over white convertible parked in front of the truck that will also get restored when I get around to it. Lastly, somewhere around here is a 1973 VW Convertible that has a black top and light blue body that I just finished restoring. The two 78 Bugs will be sold when they are completed, the blue 73 I will keep and the BMW goes to my daughter when she is old enough. Luckly for me she is only 12 so I get to drive it a while longer.
                          Regards, George
