  • Hey Rock...

Awhile back, you asked me about pics of our "big trucks and tractors", so I figure this might suffice. We don't particularly like the paint on it, but it is a runnin' fool! You all wouldn't believe the amount of welding & fabrication that has to go into one of these 4wd pulling trucks. Lets just say it takes months to get one finished to the point that you can compete with it and the guys are constantly making changes to try to improve how it hooks, revs, etc. If anyone has questions...just drop me an e-mail or a line:email I might be a little slow because we are busy as all get out right now.

It's a nice truck, 4XGirl... But Chad, just for the record, most of the Jeep guys around here have VERY little in common with those types of trucks.

      We tend to:
      1) value function over aesthitics.
      2) prefer torque to HP
      3) want to go as slow as our wallets will allow over very large rocks and such.

Those purpose-built trucks have very different goals than we do...

Not in that pic...if I was you'd go blind! (I was aggervatin' a couple of the guys when that was taken...)

Now then...to some degree pullin is hp(1000+ out of 650 cid...n/a), but to get it rollin, we gotta have torque(bout the same #'s as hp...some more, some less: depends on parts). A lot of it with us is gear selection, track conditions (hard/soft), etc. Yes, these are purpose built machines. They live their days in garages/shops, and on (aprx.) 300' of dirt. These see no rock climbin, just a sled with 40k+ lbs behind them for the 300' (or when something breaks or the truck bogs down...you get the picture). Yeah, it is a nice truck. There are better and there are worse. These machines are like women (sorry if I offend anyone, but hey, I'm a chick), they are always wanting/needing something. The guys (and gals) put enough time and $$ into them, they might as well be a member of the family. These are functional (for pulling) and someone took the engine out of his truck and put it in his drag car (with a few modifications). They do quite well in both. Good parts, the right setup, reading the track, and a good driver are essential.

            A) I have a "real rig", (built, not bought) but thanks for asking. I'd be happy to compare stats against most trail-rigs out there.

            B) While M-37's and Mogs are both great/capable vehicles, I neither dream about them nor have I ever been dragged home (by ANYthing other than my own power).

            C) For the stuff we do local to me (narrow, with lots of low trees), both rigs would be at a disadvantage to a properly built shortwheelbase vehicle.

I'm tempted to add something to this about LandCruisers, but in the interest of civility, I won't!

                  Question for ya Rock...

Got some pics of the engines in several of the 4wd pullers and even a few in the tractors that are on the circuit. The engine in the truck in the pic is over 800 cubes ( Would get into specifics on it, but the guy that owns it could get upset if too much info on the powerhouse gets out ) You know a guy by the name of Don Green? He runs an AA/FA called "Rat Trap".

This is one of the truck engines in the dyno room...

a few more of the same engine...just different views

There she is again...Clean, shining, and just waiting for someone to up the fuel/airflow on her so she can come to life...BEAUTIFUL! LOL...Imagine going mudding with that bad boy...bwahahaha

                      Bluesman:

Its a fun machine as long as she's not being cantakerous (sp?) (and as long as I'm not having to foot the bill ) which is pretty common in the pulling world. As long as you can get the machine loaded back on the trailer at the end of the event in one piece, you can consider yourself pretty lucky. (Of course, when your machine places, its always an added bonus...$$ to *maybe* pay for the tires and the fuel). Some people say they are in it just for the fun, but with the expense involved with keeping the machines running and traveling to the pulls every weekend, I don't see how they can't be 'serious' about pulling. With $10,000 paint jobs on some of these vehicles, it takes forever for them just to pay theirselves off placing consistently in the top 3 at every event, and that's without any breakage. Its an investment, that's for sure. I love pulling the wrenches and welding on almost anything (yeah, it gets to be a pain at times), but when you see a machine that you've done work on excell at an event, it almost makes it worth the expense.

Okay, I know I'm rambling now, so I'm going to go sit down and hush for awhile... 4-by Girl

I just love the Pro Stock pulling tractors - belching out a column of black diesel smoke - dirt flyin everywhere. I'm sure it's a big budget world, but most of the guys and gals look like regular folks doing all of the work themselves. The fabrication skills at this level is just amazing.

                          Amen...

Pulling at the higher levels, ATPA and NTPA, takes an endless pocket filled with Ben's to keep competetive (any motorsport and all levels of pulling for this matter...). Pullers are a unique crowd, but they are just ordinary people. For the most part, they are some of the best people you can hang around. My most favorite classes include: 4wd trucks, 2wd trucks, Super Stock tractors (Silver Bullet...enough said), and Unlimited Modifieds (turbines and multiple engines rule!!). I'm not much on diesel (compliments of being covered from head to toe in diesel fuel working on equipment), but I still love watching them go. Micro Minis are something else awesome to watch. Its amazing a machine so small can move that much weight! When I first got involved in pulling, it amazed me how much work and money went into one of these machines and it still does. Pulling and upkeep on the vehicle takes up your spare time. It becomes your life.

I crwaled all over one of those Bigfoot trucks years ago, running over cars didn't interest me a bit, but the fabrication was awsome.
and have seen those such as yours and once again was amazed with the construction of the machine and the mechanics of them.

NOW, I'm wonderin how big a shoe horn I need to get that engine in my lawn tractor!!
I'm thinkin record blastin lawn mowin here!!

Four by Girl, great stuff. I love the paint from the first pic. I would say that pulling has to be one of the hardest motorsports to build a rig for with the power of a dragster and the pulling load of a stuck tractor trailer!!! Crazy stuff.

BTW, great e-mail address!!! You must be a character!
