Jeff, Champion Trailer Parts has a free downloadable set of plans for a 5X8. They also have a tandem axle plan. Both are constructed entirely out of 2X3 angle.
Champion Trailers sells utility trailer kits for single and tandem axle units. With these kits, you can easily build one yourself. Call us for more information.
Bob,
When I made my trailer. I bought the fenders, axle, hitch and brackets from a place that made trailers. They recommended 1/8" thick angle iron. I used 3/16" on mine.
Thanks Chadrat, I guess I should have mentioned that I need to be about 16 foot long by at lease 72 inch bedwidth. I want to be able to load my JDX475 along with my chip n vac trailer at the same time. Also to haul it over to my Parents house to grade their driveway in the spring. 2000 lbs capacity should be all I need.

Bob, I talked to Champion regarding materials for a 5X8 with 3500 # axle and they said 3/16" was plenty. Cost for 1/4" isn't that much more, but the weight would be on a large trailer. Email them; they are pretty quick to respond.
I've built several trailers(i'm sure many of you have also)But for the trailer your building Bob,i would use 1/4,anything smaller and 3/16 would be fine but your making her kinda long.I've built a bunch of 6x8's with ramps,i always use 1/4 inch, they weigh in at around 600lbs but they're unbreakable, well, let's just say they're tough
Don't forget that the heavier the trailer the less payload you will have available. If Champion says 3/16 is heavy enough I would go with their recommendations. Trailers are their business you know. I posted a weight calculator a while back so you should be able to figure out what the weight would be with various thicknesses. If you need it I can post it again.
Did you get your steel at Rochester steel? Its a great place to browse around. They have lots of full length bars at salvage prices.
Nope, I am at College in Alfred NY, We have a local guy down here that has a lot of steel at pretty good prices, I paid $111.00 (with tax) for 83' of 3"x2" 3/16" angel. I'll have to check Rochester Steel out somtime.

I was quoted $94.23 here in Houston for 100'. I'm not as brave as you; I'm buying an extra 17' to allow for someone elses screw-ups.
