  • Scrap Yard Fun

Finally made the time to visit my local metal scrap yard, and what a gold mine it is. It's a large commercial metal salvage yard with acres of huge piles of steel, with the aluminum, brass and copper in a warehouse. I payed $0.15/lb for heavy angle, pipe and several pieces of plate. I'm happy as a hog in mud. Pieced together an anvil stand out of a 2" thick round ring, piece of 1/2" plate to cover the hole, 4" pipe with another 1/2" plate to top it off. The Miller Vintage did a great job of spraying everything together. Simple, effective and stable as ****. Tomorrow, welding table. Got to quit welding on the barn floor.
For any of y'all who have yet to venture into a scrap yard, DO IT! For some, it's a scrap yard, to me, it's an idea yard

I envy your scrap yard. Our city fathers find "scrap" un-pleasent. They have also banned peeling paint, and home auto repairs that take more than four hours.

Bob, I grew up in LA, and visit my parents up in Valencia every so often. There's dozens of scrap yards within 90 min of where you live. Look them up in the yellow pages or ask at your local welding shop. When start you seeing the graffiti and gang bangers, you are bound to be near a scrap yard .
I'm thinking of getting a portable cutting torch set just for cutting stuff at the yard. No sense in paying extra for stuff I don't need. There's a 30 ft tall pile of various thickness plate, from 1/4" - 3" thick. Diamond tread galore.. I'm thinking front and rear bumpers plus headache rack for my F350, as well as replacing the rotting wood with 3/16" diamond plate bed in my brother in law's old Dodge.

Chad- Wa****a Steel, North end of Chickasha, Exit 83 on I-44, just North of the Poag grain elevators. Probably larger scrap yards up towards OKC, but this is close and seems cheap so far. I was back this morning, got two 15ft pieces of 2" pipe for a future project and a couple of scraps to finish up the welding table.
