  • Storing 6011 Rods

Bought 10lb of 1/8" 6011 from my local welding supply, only to read here that I shouldn't store them unless in a (Very) dry container. I saw the plastic rod containers, but they seem too big and would allow the remaining rods to collect moisture unless used all at once. What about oven drying the rods, then placing them in small diameter (Like 1") PVC tubes, with a glued on cap at one end and friction fit cap (Maybe a tiny bit of silicone sealer) at the other end? Cheap and reusable. I thought about sealing bags, but they're fragile.
I'm sure many have already figured this issue out, so all ideas and input welcome.

Hey Flash, other than7018 rods which easily absorb moistere, I keep my rods in an old metal tool-box that ia mounted vertically on the wall with a light fixture affixed through the top and a 100 watt bulb.

      storing rods

I agree with rock all my welding rods are just stored on a shelf in my heated garage in their original containers. I don't think it will hurt them unless you stored them outside.

Your electrodes are not low hydrogen, do not I repeat do not ever put 6011 electrodes in an oven. Just keep them out of the rain.

I store 6011 electrodes in the plastic Rod Guard containers. The remaining 40 lbs stays in the cardboard box with the end taped closed untill needed. No problems. Just keep them in a dry place.

Mike, Why the caution against 6011 's?
I have found that re-proofing wire that has been exposed to moisture will bring first-strike operating parameters close to normal.

Of course this is much more evident on rutiles, the celulosic rods seem to benefit from this treatment as well.

Hi Ed, these electrodes actually require a certain amount of moisture in them. The caution is more aimed at the guy who puts them in the oven with the low hydrogen electrodes. Bad idea.
