  • Question for Aaron

    Aaron,

Does your new hi-tech helmet have a holder for a standard size (like 2X4 or whatever is standard small size is) cheater lens, or would I have to tape it in there if I got a Optrel ?
    Regards, George

According to their literature, it will take a cheater. I don't use one, so I cannot speak from experience. I will say that I am 100% satisfied with this hood. I have used it for MIG, TIG, and stick welding, and it is much better than any other I have owned.

George, I have a cheater lens in mine. Same helmet as Aaron's. It looks the same as a regular cheater lens except the short edges are milled thinner than the longer edges. I hope that made sense!

The one I have was made by Harris and I got it from BRWELDER. I hope this helps you.

Thanks for the info, I looked on their site and couldn't find any reference to being able to use a cheater. When your eyes get older you will be glad for things that help you see better. Thanks again...

          Mowjunk,

Thanks also, I just got a 25' 8/3 extention coord from BR and would probably buy the helmet from them if I decide to get one. This way I could get the cheater from them at the same time. The one I have for my Jackson has thick sides so maybe the one you have from Harris is made to fit the Optrel. BTY, that extension coord is very nice for $69 to the door. If I were to make one from 10/3 and the ends it was going to close $70 for a 30' one. This one is all molded with rubber ends and looks to be excellent quality. And 25' will get me out to the street, I won't be welding in the street anytime soon I hope unless my wife kicks me outta the house AND the garage, Ha...

George, I had called Optrel and they told me about the cheaters. I asked Bob at BR and he had them. I know what you mean about getting old.

George, its a steal. I paid $40 for 25' of 8-3 and then paid another $20-something for the plug and recep. Figure in labor and I was in the hole. If I do it again I will buy the ready made.

Their regular price is $99 so for $69 and not having to leave the house, its a good deal.

I got a 25' 8-3 cord complete with both ends a couple years ago at a Country General store for $49.99! Great deal! Oh, and they're out of buisness now.

I happened to have a piece of 6-3 wire about 50' long I pulled from a house I was remodelling, and I remembered it when I was looking for extension cords. So for about $20, I got a 50' 6-3 cord. Not bad, but those deals are harder to come by.

You demolished someone's house just to get an extention chord for your welder, shame on you But I gotta say you sure are dedicated to welding

I didn't demo the house! Read it again!

I actually pretty much restored the house. It was litterally falling in on itself, and the renovation required completely gutting the place. Apparently, the previous owner had a welder, or other large machine, as this cord was run from the electrical panel to the garage. The new owner wasn't remotely interested in keeping it, so I pulled it out.

                              Axe,

I ordered one this morning thru Ebay, then called the store and gave them my Visa number, then told them what color I wanted (blue), ordered a pack of 5 lens covers (ouch), and a 1.50 cheater (two ouches). The guy said it will be shipped on UPS today. So until it gets here I will have to use some old cardboard 3D movie glasses I got back in the fifties...NOT

                              Aaron,

Congrats, you got about the best deal on a cord ever, I think
