Hey guys... I took my NYS DOT 1" Vertical Groove weld test and passed it !!!!!!! But I have a few questions.... What type of jobs does this open me up to? Is it even a big deal to have it? I have heard its only like a 30% pass rate is that true?

Thanks.... Take classes for what? I am 21 and took 2 years of College for welding technologies, and have my associates in it. I have a really nice job right now, But I can't get use to going all over the country, but then again making over $1,000 in one week is nice to. So I hope this dot thing might land me a good job thats local.

Its hard to tell if its going to be useful or not. It cant hurt. I have never tested ahead of time for anything. I have been 3 or 4 places that have tested after the fact. Came in the middle of the day and got us to go to the test booth after we been on the job for 6 weeks. One time I shot 25 or 30 ultra sound joints and then had to run a test coupon.

Tungsten lives in the strange land of Neuevo Hillareah like I do, so much of what is done here wouldn't make sense to people who live in sane areas of the country.
If the DOT test is anything like most NYS testing, passing it probably qualifys him to freeze & sweat his *** off attempting to weld on any bridge covered under DOT authority. I said TRY for a good reason, we have a lot of bridge beams in NY that are magnetic for some reason, and welding on them is a major pain in the ***. We also have lots of bridges in hthis area with cribhouse pilings and timbers as well as jack posts holding them up.
Tungsten, just hang that cert on the wall, and thiink of it as another diploma, cause you don't want to weld on bridges.

I'm not quite following you here, I assume (!) the NYSDOT test is like most state DOT tests, a modified D1.5 for bridge work, but a D1.5 is not much use unless you do a horizontal, vertical and overhead.
I'm not sure what good a single vertical will do.

JT, unless you've experienced NY "government" it's impossible to understand.
We haven't had a state budget on time in 19 years, and this year, we got a bonus, higher sales tax and a 30k deduction off the top of income tax for "rteachers". Can you guess what union contributes the most to politicians?
Virtually all laws relative to licensing seem to get passed during the last 72 hours of any legislative session, and I've asked legislators how they could be dumb enough to have voted for some items, the answer I got was they just vote yes cause they are told to by party bosses, cause they can't read everything.
Our DEC officers have just been ordered to work NO overtime under penalty of termination. They are only allowed to wirk from 8 to 4 or from Noon to 8, so poaching oughta be real easy for those inclined.
In some towns, we even need a plumbing permit to replace a water heater, and only a licensed plumber can pull the permit.
DOT splitting the welding certificate 3 ways would allow them to charge for 3 tests and get more money into their hands. I'd be willing to bet a whole dollar no state inspector will ever ask to see a weldor's certificates on a job because the inspectors probably don't know weldors are supposed to be certified. An actual State Inspector would be a reportable sighting here, since most jobs are run by a project engineer who usually can't find the job, let alone know what it is. An engineering firm would be contracted to run the job, and they'd put a student out there in the trailer, usually related to a politician, or company owner.
Gee, this may just account for the condition of our roads & bridges. It's all about make work here in NY.

                Hi Franz,

Well, we are talking about the folks that elected Hillary, so's I'm inclined to believe.
I've never done business in NY but I do venture into the Peoples Republik of California every so often and that's pretty hairy.
Anyway, I'm still interested in hearing how or why they are giving a vertical only test.

Well JT, if you go to Californee in the near future it appears there won't be as many of those pesky CHiPs to bother you, they are laying off 700+ of them to save money. They are also laying off a bunch of those dang truck inspectors too.

I wish they would do it that way. But instead they make you pay for eachone. But I would think they would get plenty of money seeings the pass fail rate for the vertical is less then 50%.

I knew it was a way to get more money.
NY Government, those who can't work leading those who won't work, supervising the union of those who absolutely refuse to work. No wonder they always need more money.
