  • Plasma cutter question ?

I got a Hypertherm 1000(60 amp machine) about a week ago and I haven't tried it out yet.(having to work too much). I wanted to know if and what kind of filters or dryers yall use on your air lines? I have never used a plasma cutter and wondered if their is any thing particular I should know or any tips you guys have. Do you run the tip perpindicular to the work or at an angle usually? Do you drag the cup or try to maintain constant distance from the work? What constant distance if so? I assume you have to run the amps up higher for aluminum and stainless, is that right? Do you have to adjust the air pressure for different materials? Thanks for any tips, this board is great!!!

ECHO8287...........OK I HAVE SEVERAL PLASMA CUTTERS..... BUT NOT YOURS...........ON THE FILTER THE ONLY TYPE MY BROTHERS AND I HAVE EVER USED IS THE PAPER CANISTER TYPE THE PAINTERS INSTALL INBETWEEN THEIR GUNS AND AIR LINES..... I'VE TRIED OTHERS THIS TYPE HAS ALWAYS DONE EXCELLENT BY US.................OUR PLASMA CUTTERS (ALL PORTABLE) HAVE STAND OFF'S ON THEM OR 2 HAVE DRAG CUPS ON THEM........... WE HAVE CUT ALUMINUM WITH THEM BUT MAINLY STAINLESS AND STEEL... WE HAVE 5 PLASMA CUTTERS........................GOOD LUCK..... ROCK........... [email protected]

Hi echo, this is the filter I use right at the cutter. I also have a water separator at the compressor.

        Bob,

Good price! About the same as mine if you had some shipping.

          Thanks for the info!

Hey Deere,I liked the bucket you made for the "Green Machine". Since you have had the plasma cutter for awhile ,do you have any tips for me. I was going to try and fire mine up this weekend and check it out. I saw on another post you had the standoff with the wheels on the side. How does it work? Do you keep the cutter perpindicular to the work or at an angle? Does your Miller have 3 or 4 wires on the plug? Thanks for the link!

Hi Echo...thanks...I enjoy building that stuff. As far as tips go..just make sure your air supply is a clean as you can get it and practice as much as you can. The rollers are good for long cuts on wider pieces of material. I am thinking about making a track for it to do the straight cuts. Something I might mess with over the winter. I use mine to bevel cut all my stuff for joint prep and I beveled the edge of that blade with it. Will and I hand grinded the first one. We took turns grinding on it. After an hour and a half and a wore out 7" grinder wheel we were done. I had it completely finished in about 10 minutes including the finish grind on it with the plasma cutter. Thing is saving me a ton of time.

Hope this helps...good luck and have fun
