  • Battery Charger?

    A buddy of mine asked me to do some repairs on a road sander for him, as the sander is stainless and he did not have a mchine to do the repairs.
    While doing the repairs he asked me if I could repair his "Miller
    Battery Charger" as every time he tried to use it it would just blow the batterys apart.

    When I finished I said that I would take a look, what he gave me was a Miller 151 Maxstar, with a snap start and a set of 2 ground cables.

    The machine had come with another truck, the owners wife gave the machine to him thinking that it was some type of charger he not knowing any better gave it a try.

    I took the machine in trade for the repairs.

        I think that is more of a Startall booster unit than a charger. Of course I once ran an electric crane from a welder cause the crane had a dead battery and had been sitting looking sad in the corner of a museum shop for 5 years. They couldn't afford 18 new batterys, and suffered from a shortage of ability to think outside the box. The crane went back into service with 3 tractor batterys and a series paralell switching array so they could charge them.

          The machine numbers are

          Welder KA769115
          Snap Start Ka764786

          I gave the machine a good test the other nite, seems to operate fine, the adjustments all work.

          Thanks

              bjdenommee;

              Both of the units were built in March of 1990. You have a good combination of a stick/tig unit at an even better price.

                Chip, construction crews have been using welders for 'hot start' chargers since the very beginning, not a very safe practice, but one that has been going on for a long time.

                    I just stenciled "Not a Battery Charger" on both sides of my welder, just below "No Step" and above "No Arc Watching".
