  • Gouging With A Champion 16

I HAVEN"T BEEN ABLE TO GET A DEFINATIVE ANSWER FROM
MY LOCAL WELD SUPPLY ON USING AN ARC-AIR WITH MY CHAMPION 16 WITHOUT FRYING IT. I SHOULD BE ABLE TO USE
1/8" - 3/16" CARBON RODS. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE
WITH THIS. SIGN ME AS NO GUTS, ON THIS ONE. THANK'S

Champ 16 is a bit small for continuous use as a power source for gouging. If a little bit here and there is all you need, it may work just fine for you.
The pipeliners and other big welders are the machine of choise for air-arc use.(250 amp continuous rating and above)
1/8 and 3/16 carbons will be the max on a small machine, make sure you get copper clad air-arc electrodes, and not general purpoise AC arc torch carbons, there is a difference.
work safe, always wear your safety glasses.

      watch out

The Champ is basicly a Bobcat in different sheet metal. It will AG on small carbons but it is real tough on it. Make shure you clean the slip rings after or your arc will suck. I have seen the brushes come apart from over heating after AG.
XMT 300CC/CV (yes it still works)
Bobcat 225, Hobart Hefty CC/CV wire feeder, Profax spool gun,Victor & Smith O/A, Lincoln Tombstone(sold), Airco HF box (old Miller) MM175, IR 4KW gen set,all paid for, all work. My newest addition MM130 salvaged from a Kitrina flood area. Cleaned up and works great. . Just added a Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC, total cost to repair both less than $200.00, they both work great...another Katrina cast off.
