Most of my welding now is fast repair jobs on rusty farm machinery. I presently run solid .30 wire with 25/75 gas. A friend told me that if I switched to flue core wire and run gas also I could get better weld on rusty metal. I try to clean metal up with grinder and wire wheel but you can't get to all the rust. The metal I run into ranges from 16 gauge to 3/8". The thicker stuff I turn on my buzz box and stick it. Solid or flue core?

It can be a little eaier to change the characterisics of the weld with flux and it works better out doors and better with dirty conditions. You can use a torch to clean metal sometimes too. A lot would be if you minded the flux in between passes. We use solid here because its so much easier to clean and faster for poor fitup. Use a stick if its dirty.

HAYMAKER......... I AGREE ........ I USUALLY TRY AND CLEAN UP THE DIRTY MATERIAL AS WELL AS POSSABLE...... NOTHING CONTAMINATES THE WELD MORE THAT MILL SCALE, ETC....... I'VE HAD SOME SUCESS USEING FLUX-CORED AND CO2.....IT TENDS TO DRIVE THE ARC DEEPER.......... HOWEVER WE CLEAN THE MATERIAL AS BEST AS POSSABLE FIRST................ BE SAFE NOW...........ROCK.................
