  • Free helmet

I love my new 251, but I'm cussing the free helmet I got.

It keeps flashing me. I have basically set it aside in favor of my Harbor Freight one of all things. I can see a lot better with the new one though. I'm hoping there is something wrong with it.

I finally realized I have to push the little reset/on button before using it every morning, or it doesn't work at all. If I forget, BLAM! Is this normal? I guess the HF one I have is just on all the time. If you are supposed to have to turn it on, then some of them can be chalked up to user error.

There is no trouble-shooting info in the manual. It does say something about pushing the button "after an extended time". How long is that supposed to be?

Even when it is working though, it has blasted me a few times. I have tried leaving it in the sun a while and I have the sensitivity on max. Heck, it goes dark just looking around the shop at lights or if someone is welding across the room, but it still somehow manages to flash me while *I* am welding at times.

    Any help appreciated.

I am sure thats not normal. I have one also from my MM251 and it has never flashed me like at all. I never have to push the reset either. I do have the delay set a little longer than was set when I got it and the sensitivity set so when I hold it up to the 600 watt halogen light I have it goes dark. I am really happy with the way mine if working.

I don't have a Hobart hood, but a Speedglas, and I imagine that with all auto-dark hoods this will apply.

When TIG welding, it must be set to TIG and sensitivity set to ambient light. To ste it for ambient light, hold the hood at the toward the place where you're going to weld, turn the sensitivity to dark , then back it up so that it lightens up. That's the 'sweet spot', and it will function properly. When MIG welding, must be set for MIG...the MIG arc is instant, whereas the TIG is not.

Another thing that happens is the if the sensors are blocked by your hand or something in the way, you'll get flashed. You have to be aware at all times to make sure the sensors can see the arc.

I bought the 251 and didn't get a helmet. I had to fax my reciept of purchase so they would get me one. Evidently I bought machine the first day of special.

I haven't had any problems with mine. I placed it in direct sunlight like instructed and no problems. Well the only problem I have is I still get things set up and a big NOD followed by "you ....you have on the new hood"

I think that my lens went belly up after 2 years. Always had to reset it before welding, and now it only darkens to about a 6-7 no mater where it is set. Lens is clean/no obstructions. Any suggestions to revive it would be appreciated.

It was a real "Money Maker" when it was working- light weight, big lens.... got me spoiled.

You have reached the end of product life. Planned replacement enterval. This is best testamony for disposable cheap battery and not disposable expensive gaget.

Easy to fix using dental tool to remove potting compond to get at battery.

I have a Hobart Hood and mine flashes me to, alot, but I haven't had to press the reset button but only 1 time. Mine doesn't have a delay setting on it, but it acts as if there is absolutely no delay on it. When welding if I ever break my circuit for 1 instant, by mistake running a weld, it will flash me. Even when starting a weld and striking the arc too start, it flash every time. Is this right to? The cheaper Lincoln auto helmut I tried didn't do this. Matter of fact my Hobart Hood will not darken if looking into a 500 watt halogen light. I love the helmet though. It's near perfect in every other respect.

                      Thanks,
                      Mike

Of course I charged it up in the sun. Almost a full day too!
And that was when I first started using the helmet, about a month and a half ago. So far I would say I have used the helmet about 40 hours. (About 30 hours of that in the sun.)

I mean I really love this helmet except for the flashing, and I still like it so well I'll put up with the flashing to use it! But I'd prefer it not to flash....

                            Cheers,
                            Mike

I got a Jackson Master V HTLS because I didn't want a solar/non changable battery combo [it uses 2 AAA types]. So far it has been great, the only problem I have with it is that it has a auto shut off if you don't strick an arc for about 15-20 minutes [battery saving feature I guess]. If you pick it up to use and the auto shut off has shut it off and its not turned black yet, you will get flashed. Happened only once to be, now if it's been 10 minutes or so, I just hit the on button to be sure. I've had it about a year and a half [one battery change], but if [when] it breaks, I'll get a speedglas.
                              Regards, George
