  • PowCon History (long)

I asked ROCK the other day and he didn't know. Several of you have PowCon machines.

    Hello Alan,

PowCon was started in the late 70s or early 80s. I started working at
    PowCon in October 1990.

    1) In 1994 PowCon was bought by ITW (Illinois Tool Works) -- the same
Parent Company that bought out Miller the year before.

    2) The next year Hobart was bought out by ITW, and PowCon was closely
paired with Hobart for Sales & Support. Part of the deal of Hobart being
bought out was that they had to drop 70% of their Welding/Engine Drive
products. Most of those items (all Units over 250 Amps, and all 3 Phase
Units and all Wire Feeders) were turned over to Arcsys & Prestolite.

    3) Later Miller, PowCon and Hobart (and some other Welding Products
related companies) were put together in the ITW Welding Products Group.

    4) In December 1997 the announcement was made to shut down PowCon as a
manufacturing facility. Then a company was sought to provide Technical
Support and Spare Parts Support for the PowCon products -- Arc Products was
    contracted to do that.

    5) PowCon closed down in April 1998, and Arc Products officially took over
to support the PowCon products. There are a few "PowCon" name products
which Arc Products does not support -- These include Units made for PowCon
by Kemppi (in Finland), the two first versions of the Spool Guns (SGS-I and
SGS-II), Rota-Drive Wire Feeder, and a some other products.

    6) I have some notes on other companies who may have support (if any is
available) for the PowCon Units that Arc Products does not support. I also
have listings for other Manufacturer's equipment, some of which Arc
Products does support, and some are supported through other companies. You
can check with us first in many cases and I can direct you to the correct
company that provides support, or I can let you know if there is no support
    to be found.

Thanks for letting us serve you,

Well, We're stuck with you so why not. Seriously, he has been quite helpful to me. Usually replies immediately. The history request took a day or two.

I say no for one reason,it will get more of the word out on Powcons, and make finding them cheap harder to do!Besides by the time Cope is done with his research he will know more than the guy that built them!

Those tech guys are some off the smartest people around,so bring him in if possible.

ROCK, ****ed right I'm grinning. Glad to have Ian around, and its not often Scott agrees with anybody.

Scott, I know you have a soft spot for PowCons, so don't go getting upset.

Cope you amaze me at your in depth knowledge of the Pow Con machine. I have yet to fix mine, shop has been pretty busy lately, although I'm going to get it back from Praxair and try to fix it myself in the next month or so. First I need to pay for the new miller 251 this month and I also need to buy a generator welder next week for I have a couple field jobs lined up.

Try Arc-Products as I already suggested. If that doesn't work, call these guys. Long way from home, but they had a board in my Lincoln High Freq. rebuilt reasonably.

Cope, I am goint to have to replace the process switch on my powcom, as it seems to not work right all of the time.

I have seem some pic of newer units that incorperate a rotory type design switch, I am going to check with the above mention group and see if I could use this type on my rig.

It seems that when ever the machine is moved the switch changes inside, IE the switch is in the same position however the machie is operating on a differant process.

Thats the only problem that we have now with it.

                      Thanks

Bernie, if its what I think it is, its a puddle control switch. I thought my switch was bad, but the amphenol connector is the culprit; Occasionally I get the stick mode ticking sound in GMAW mode. When I do, I can wiggle the cable from the feeder to the inverter and the ticking stops. When I hear it, the MIG gun is hot.
                        Thanks

Hey Scott, I called and was told board would cost about $ 425.00.
I still need to go and get my machine from Praxair and ask a few questions and maybe I'll try to buy and put this board in. I don't know how difficult this will be though.

(PS) anybody have a Powcon 300 SM for sale call me at 262-224-0626

Hey just thought of something maybe this site could have a for sale board like the AWS site.

                            Powcon

Jerry, can you get away using three phase only? The people who bought mine might have a beat up looking 300 sm for sale. It's even painted blue. That the reason they bought mine, because it was 3/1 phase. We hooked theirs up,and it worked, but only three phase. This one really might go really cheap?I don't know for sure, but It could be worth checking out.Maybe the board might work between the two?

Hey Scott, I only have single phase power in this shop. But if business keeps growing I may move and then I'd hope to get into building with three phase, but right now I have only single.
Does that unit yuo speak of work. I'll have to get my unit back and check out serial# for board. Hope I can get some info from Praxair as to what my machine #'s are and exactly what is wrong, oh yeh he said you could see holes in the main board guess that tells me thats bad.

Hope to get unit this week.
