    Bill,

I used a Jackson Shadow for years, not sure that model is even made any more. It was feather light, and fairly tight around the head.

I've only used the auto darkining kind a few times and think I could get used to them. But after years of lifting a hood, if was hard not to.

To be honest, I'm not sure what a 2/4 even is. But if it works for you and protects your eyes ok, let them laff.

I have a Jackson Journeyman V-HTLS. It is the low end Jackson auto lens hood. OMS, it is a Shadow. I'm happy with it. If I had the money and welded for a living, I would upgrade to the Next Gen for the extra features.

I use a Speedglass by Hornell, pretty much a top of the line auto helmet, only the best for these 2 eyes!On the other hand,I just got a free Miller auto helmet with my mm210 and i hate to bash products but their welders are far superior to their helmets, this thing has flashed me so many times it ain't funny, shes goin back to the dealer this week, hopefully it's just a defect and i'll get another one?

If you make pro-quality welds it would not seem to matter much what brand/grade/color tools you use or how you use them. As long as the welds are sound and safe, ignore those who would laugh.

Bill, if they laughed at me, I would put the hood and jacket back in the truck. Still many, many good weldors out there who couldn't give a monkey's about auto hoods.

Maybe my response wan't that clear.I use an auto helmet for many reasons,I weld for a living, usualy 6-7 days a week, you simply can't beat the speed, you can crawl into tight spots with the helmet down and see what your doing while your in there,i wouldn't trade it for anything. That being said there seems to be a misconception that your not "professional" or not a good welder if you don't have a auto helmet and thats BS.Some of the guys that taught me still use the old 2x4 helmets of yesteryear to this day and they are without a doubt "pro" welders. The time my helmet saves me makes it worth every penny, thats why i have it.Let your welds do the talkin and show them theres more to it than fancy gear.

BTW-guys laugh at me all the time on job sites,i'm always tangled up in my own cables and hoses and extension cords, don't let'em getcha down!

Hi Arc...so far mine hasn't flashed me at all. I have the delay set to max and the sensitivity set to turn on the shade when I look up at the 1200 watts of halogen lights I have hanging from the ceiling.

Will used it this weekend and really liked it.

I used a Heinz 57 2x4 helmet for years untill this past winter when I got a Hobart Hood.

My Heinz 57 was a real light plastic hood with the real good webbing from a Jackson helmet. I fixed the front to accept tempered glass instead of the plastic inserts. This was an extremely light hemet that absolutely stayed anywhere on your head that you put it, and the lens would clean up without scratching or dulling. (Had a friend who was in the glass business and gave me the glasss, cut to fit.)

As for the Hobart Hood, the flashing mentioned above is the only thing I don't like about it. Mine has flashed me many times also. It just ain't sensitive enough and there is no sensitivity adjustments that I can find, but I think the main problem is there is so little delay before the filter switches off. I guess I should have gotten one with the sensitivity/delay adjustents for a few bux more, but I didn't know any different at the time. It does seem that that these auto-darkening helmets would benefit from 4 sensors too, one at each side of the lens, but my problem is more of a delay with the darkening switching off too fast than it is with the sensors.

I tried a Lincoln auto-darkening helmet for a week before I got the Hobart Hood, but the Lincoln had absolutely no controls, was 2x4, heavy, and worst of all you had to push a button in the front of the lens, on the front of the helmet to activate the unit every time you used it. If inactive for about 5 or 10 minutes it would automatically turn off, and you never knew or would forget to check it and you would get flashed with it. Poor come off for a auto-darkening helmet considering the money, but it absolutely would not flash me if the unit was on unlike the Hobart Hood. Still with this sensitivity/delay flaw I like the Hobart Hood much better.

                      Cheers,
                      Mike

                        Hi Guys

I have Fibermetals helmets, 4x2 and the larger 4x4

It does not matter what you wear, if it works and fits use it.

My nephew complains and whines about my helmets, he run a speedglass which I cannot wear, seems like I still try to flip.

I had A guy who worked many years for me , and he had painted his helmets Pink so no one would wear them but him it was a good idea.

                            Tools

I use a Jackson Shadow and I am looking to upgrade to a Jackson Next Gen 3N1, I end up in a lot of tight quarters repairing farm equipment. The old jackson has and will continue for a long time yet.

As far as anyone laughing at your tools shrug it off. An old guy once told me it is not the cost of your tools but your ability to use the well.

Bob,wait for the real test,Aaron! He will find the flaw in your helmet.

I think the Miller one with The 251 is not a bad unit,(I think older optrel model)and the head gear seemed pretty good.If it didn't flash me I could use it,and like it.
