  • Pipe bender, one more time!!!

I want a pipe and tubing bender that I would mostly use with 3/4" square and round tubing. Also I would probably use it to make 90 degree bends in material up to 3/16". What would be the best bargain? Price does not necessary make something the best bargain. I want a quality unit without spending too much money.

Gee, I always wanted a fancy pipe bender, but I've never used one. Never even really seen one used either. Is much learning involved with the units that were listed above?

    Cheers,
    Mike

The shop outfitter looks like it would do the most for the buck.

From the little I have seen of all the above, I think you are right.

My Dad got us geared benders must have been over 30 years ago for 1/2 to 1.

They work ok, but they do take time to get used to, I replace the handles with a rachet assembly from an older Ridge Pipe threader.

I have seen the same bender on E Bay for around 35.00 I was going to bid on one for spare parts.

          Good Luck

pipe and tubing are very different, one is measured by od and the other by ID. which are you wanting to bend pipe or tube ?

there are alot of different priced options for bending tube depending on what you're trying to build

www.jd2.com - about $250 for the bender and $200 PER die
                http://www.pro-tools.com/mb105.htm - about same price as JD2
                http://www.tubeshark.com/ - lots o dollars

hydraulic jack powered benders (there are several variations of this design out there):

http://www.toolsplus1.com/eztube.htm - these aluminum dies have been questioned before on other forums as to their strength - though you get alot for the price (since you get 4 dies with the bender)

or you could make one yourself:

there are ALL kinds of benders out there but this is a start.

                good luck.

I would recommend the Hossfeld number 2 bend. They have hundreds of dies to bend just about anything. Like tube, pipe, angle iron and a lot more. Not really cheap but extremely versatale. You might be able to get a good deal on one on Ebay.

Well, there is a good alternative. Harbor Freight sells a unit for $139, on sell for next two weeks (until May 12) for $69.99, looks identical to the Hossfeld unit. It will bend all kinds of metal, rods, tubes, pipe, etc. Metal scrollers use it for wrought iron work. Also, they sell a hydralic tube/pipe bender with several dies, operated manually, for $30.00 (uses a small bottle jack).

Jack, I have most of the parts to a hossfeld bender number 2. I bought it on ebay for $300 from a retiring horseshoer. It is about 45 years old. I need to find some time to take it a part and get it powder coated. I also need to buy some dies for it.

Dan, The HF unit might look like a hossfeld number 1 unit from a distance. The Hossfeld number 2 will do all of the heavy stuff. I would not try to bend any pipe or tube on a HF unit. You don't get the dies for it. Their hydraulic unit is a pipe bender. I have heard that it kinks tubing. Pipe is thicker stuff.

I looked all over HFs pages and I can't find that $139.00 lookalike on sale for any price! What secret place you looking at?

                            Mike,
The item number is 31980. I think it looks more like a shop outfitters bender instead of a Hossfeld.
