Hello friends.. I bought a Hobart RC256 power supply on E-bay tonight.. Looked in real good shape. It seems to have a 5 prong plug that goes to it.. I figure the Hobart 27A wire feeder should hook up easy enough.. but my question is this.. All of my feeder send 115 volt DC back to the power source to close the contactor. How does the Hobart power source work?? Does it require 115 volt too??? or is it 24 volt??or both?? Could someone tell me what each of the 5 prongs in the plug go to??It would sure help in wiring up things.. All Good.. Mike.. BTW.. still looking for an extra 4 roll wire feeder..

MYSTORES..........FIRST THE GOOD NEWS THE 27A WILL HOOK UP TO THE RC256 ...... THE ONLY VOLTAGE IN THE 5 PIN AMPHENOL PLUG IS (NO VOLTAGE). HOWEVER PIN "A" AND PIN "B" ARE DRY CONTACTOR CLOSURE ONLY........IN OTHER WARDS WHEN YOU SHORT THESE PINS TOGETHER THE CONTACTOR IN THE MACHINE CLOSES AND PRODUCES CURRENT. SO WHEN YOU PULL THE GUN TRIGGER THIS CLOSES THE CONTACTOR.............. NOW THE BAD NEWS PLEASE SUPPLY SERIAL NUMBER AS I RECALL THIS MACHINE WAS 3 PHASE AND NOT CONVERTABLE TO SINGLE PHASE.......... DO YOU HAVE 3 PHASE POWER.............LET ME KNOW......... LOOKING FOR A REPLACEMENT FEEDER 4 ROLL SYSTEM LOOK AT THE R-115 MILLER FEEDER IT WILL WORK......................ROCK...

Good news..
Hi Friend.. The good news is I have 3 phase in my shop.. Now back to the plug.. Since the plug has 5 prongs.. and the needs are only 2 to close the circuit.. which 2 are used.. What are the other 3 pins for??? are they even there??? My old Miller Spoolmatic 1 wirefeed gun send 115 volt back to the connector... How would that be hooked up.. It has a WC1 control box.. Last question... My Hobart 27 feeds soooooooooooo much better than my Airco 2 roll feeders.. Is it the 4 rolls?? that makes it feed so smooth..or do 2 roll feeders today work as well.. There are a few 52 Millers down here at a really good price.. but I'm holding out for the Miller 115.. Think I'm correct??? All Good MikeMike

GOOD MIKE..........YOU IN LUCK WITH 3 PHASE.......YES IN THE AMPHENOL PLUG ONLY A AND B ARE USED...........AND NO VOLTAGE REQUIRED.......BASICALLY WHEN YOU PULL YOUR GUN TRIGGER TO ENERGIZE THE FEEDER AND THE POWER SUPPLY IT IS SHORTING A AND B TOGETHER IN THE AMPHENOL PLUG. BY THE WAY THE OTHER 3 PINS IN THE AMPHENOL ARE NOT USED.......... BY ALL MEANS HOLD OUT FOR THE R-115 MILLER FEEDER.... 4 DRIVE ROLLS FEED LARGE SPOOLS OF WIRE MUCH BETTER THAN TWO DRIVE ROLLS. WERE TALKING 30 POUND ROLLS HERE..........THEY WILL ALSO PUSH THE WIRE OUT TO THE 15 FOOT GUN BETTER THAN A TWO DRIVE ROLL SYSTEM...............WELL FIRE IT OFF AND SEE HOW IT WORKS..............ROCK........................... ..[email protected]

I have a two roll Hobart 2020 feeder or at least I think thats the number. It's a great feeder.feeds perfect, and lots of interesting drive rolls.I had a lincoln ln9 two roll that would feed everything fine also.I also have a esab voltage sensing four roll that feeds fine too. Also a few other two,and four roll stuff.I think the four roll might, and I say might feed softer wire a little better? The most important thing in the feeding for most feeders is having both drive rolls driven.Although the Lincoln ln9 does not use that setup,or even the ln25.So that is not set in stone either. So I say if it works who cares if it has one roll or twelve?I think the real question you should be asking is how many drive rolls do you like buying at a time?I think the Lincoln Ln9 would push the wire right though the side of the gun,and in your hand before it would stop feeding even with a twenty foot gun with a 44# spool of wire.

Hi Scott.. Are the 5 pin plugs marked ABCDE??? or do you just keep guessing 2 until the contactor kicks in?? Are the other 3 just dummies or do they have another function.. By the way.. how many Miller rolls are really made..??? I've bought countless ones on E-bay.. and they all seem to look the same except for the groove sizes and type of groove.. they all have the 3 cutouts and the same OD. and Yes.. I run for the most part 33 to 44 pound spools to start with.. another thought... is Tweco going to "?????"xxxx... The Tregaskiss gun on my Hobart feeder is a dream.. seems much better quality than Tweco is today.. I've changed liners..and everything else that can be changed and it does not feed anywhere as smooth as the Tregaskiss.. Is that also common..?? Anyway.. I'm glad I have my Hobart 27.. and look foreward to getting my Hobart 2000 feeder up and running..but FIRST windfall..I'm looking at the Miller 115.. All Good.. MikeMike

Hi Scott.. Thanks for the feedback. Here in New Orleans there is better support for Miller than Lincoln.. and this website is a great example of Miller/Hobart going the extra mile to help those who can't afford a new feeder..getting the right information.. and parts easily.. That means alot to me.. I only run 4 sizes of wire.. and my hope is to set up 4 feeders with 4 guns one time and be finished. .030doc copper .035 steel and stainless .045 stainless flux core. I make ornamental iron and repair old castings for ornamental use.. The .035 steel CO2 is my weld all steel setup.. In repairing castings the .030copper/bronze and the .035 stainless 75/25 is often used back to back... and the .045 stainless fluxcore for slag/sand castings is helpful for the base root.. I run 15' guns only and 33 to 44 pound spools.. Wonder how many pounds you can run before a wheel wears out?? I'll bring a 2 roll to the shop and see what pro's can do..Maybe its in fine tuning.. or a bad board?? I don't have a clue..but I was Ok.. until I got my 27 Hobart.. It made everything I own look bad.. see my point.. Anyway.. thanks.. I'll be back.. Have a great weekend.. MikeMike

Mike,I only have Benards, and Lincolns,Tregaskiss. At this point with the Tregaskiss giving me the most touble.I changed every thing, and it was still welding funny. It cleared up,and it's fine, and in fact for a short-arc gun its pretty good with the Esab small nozzle on it.My Esab/Tregaskiss(almost M-25)clone has the Tweeco back end so it fits the Hobart, and my Lincoln powermig 300.Plus I have a adapter to go to Miller machines. So that version is a better deal then the M-25 one.
The pin setup on my Hobart feeder had I think five pins, but I am not sure on that.I just gave the plug to my friend at the welding store, because my machine only needed the two contactor wires. It had a separate power cord.I pulled the cover before I cut the wires to see where they went.My 2020 feeder only had two wires inside the plug cord.So that was kind of easy for me to figure.Does yours your have a separate power cable?I am not even sure if I have seen a model 27 so I better not try to tell you anything about it.Just see how many wires it has.If It only has one cord you should beable to tell by removing the cover.
As far as drive rolls, I trade in my machine before they show any signs of abuse. If you use flux-core drive rolls with solid wire it will speed up the wear a lot.

Hi Scott.. The Hobart 27 is a 115 volt AC feeder with a regular lamp plug for power.. and a lamp plug output for the contactor.. plus an extra 24 volt contactor wire that also houses a close contact wire for later model feeders. It is a 4 roll with feeder gear so ALL 4 rolls feed.. really works smooth.. I have a lifetime suppy of Tweco parts.. so I use Tweco.. but the Tregaskiss sure feels good in the hand.and welds nicely too. I'm trying my hand at building an A1-4D feeder.. which is a Miller 4 roll feeder. Its 115 volt DC. I have a new Tweco 250 gun that fits it and a new gas valve. Making my own power source to power the drive motor and using a contactor to open and close the gas valve and send voltage back to the welding machine. It will be interesting if it works. I do not know about burn back and such.. but my old Airco had none of these features anyway. All these transitors leave me cold.. I hope this rugged design works.. If it does.. I'll keep the board posted. There might be alot in your words about new.. All of my equipment is old..and well maintained.. but still old.. A new feeder might cure all problems..Time will tell.. All Good.. Have a great weekend.. Mike
