  • Large disk grinder.

Guys, I am looking to pick up a large (9 to 12 inch) grinder that is mounted so that you can feed the side of the metal into it. Kinda like the sanders you see for wood working that are usualy sold as a belt/disk sander. Does anyone know where to get one of these. I thought about buying on of the jets sold locally here but it looks to me like it is just for wood. Maybe I am wrong.

    Thanks
    Bob

Couldn't you just put a side arm grinder in a tripod vise ? Or are you looking for something more permanent

Bob,I think most times they just turn slower for wood,so it does not burn it.I use my 1725 rpm belt, disc sander from Grizzly for mostly metal. It's the 6 x 48 x 12 disc size, and is made at the same Taiwan factory as the Jet for about $300 dollars cheaper.Look around a little for the other sanders. Is this what you are talking about or something else.Seems like a grinder the wheel would expode.

          12 sander

          Good morning

I have a 12" X Belt sander I think the sander is a 30" it is mounted on a Rockwell machine that is 110 vlt and is belt drive.

I use this machine for all of my finish cuts, and dressing up welds.

I buy the pressure apply 12" pads from woodworkers warehouse
          as well as replacement belts.

I think the machine was made for wood, but I us it for metals.

A buddy of mine bought a compond mitre saw from sears and put on a 12" metal blade in it and uses that as his chop saw makes nice cuts. you know the tough ones.

          Good Luck

Scott, thanks thats exactly what I was wanting to know. I can get a simular machine at production tool. Now that I know you can use it for metal thats what I will get.

            Thanks everyone for your responses.

I have a 6" X 48" belt/ 9" disc sander Combo machine that has only been used for metal. I ve had it for 10 years now. Mine looks similar to this.
MigMaster 250- Smooth arc with a good touch of softness to it. Good weld puddle wetout. Light spatter producer.
Ironman 230 - Soft arc with a touch of agressiveness to it. Very good weld puddle wet out. Light spatter producer.

                    Room

Same here never enough room. in order to complete any project you first have to move all unused stuff any where it will fit.

how does the belt/disc sander compare to a bench grinder with a rock on it ?

30' x 30' shop. I would like to add another 30' to it so I will have enough room.

                          Jack,what is the rock for?

I almost never use my bench grinder, now that I have a belt/disc sander. That's about all I could say in how it compares.

I use the rock for grinding whatever metal thing needs to be ground on ... use it most times on small things that can't be easily clamped and ground on with a side grinder. occasionally I'll grind on something big, not too often though.

you almost never using your bench grinder is a pretty good vote for it's usefullness. i'd been looking at smaller ones for a while. I think i'll get a 6x48/9" disc now ... thanks for the info.

My bench grinder is only used for 2 purposes. One stone is for sharpening tungstens and the other stone is for sharpening drill bits. My belt /Disc combo or and angle grinder with a sanding disc are my choices for prepping and finish work - rounding corners and other such tasks.

The 6X48belt/9" disc that I have has plenty of power for metal work. I would have like to went with a larger machine but at the time I had just got done forking out $850 for a bandsaw, and $500 for drill press. So I decided to be a nice guy and get the $200 saner instead of the $450. Believe it or not my wife was actually pushing me toward the $450 machine. In the end though for home use I have beeen happy with my choice.
