  • NEW MILLER Drive rolls for Beta Mig 251 - what' the deal?

    OK Support Guys,

We spoke a few days ago over the phone on the subject of replacement drive rolls (.024/.030/.030) for Beta Mig 251. I got your fax - thanks - and I ordered the appropriate part numbers for the drive rolls - 171435-001 (.024) and 171435-002 (.030/.035) from the local distributor. The rolls arrived yesterday. Now, here's where it gets fubar -

Upon inspection of the contents of the packages prior to payment I discovered this:

    1. The 171435-001 (.024) idler rolls are stamped .024 - .035 ON BOTH SIDES of the roll.

    2. The 171435-002 (.030/.035) idler rolls are stamped .024 - .035 ON BOTH SIDES of the roll.

The only difference between the rolls is:
    1. 171435-001 (.024) idler rolls are 'U' grooved
    2. 171435-002 (.030/.035) idler rolls are 'V' grooved

    What's the deal?

    So answer me these questions:

    1. How is Miller going to get me the correct drive rolls for the .024 wire? The local supplier whinned like a baby that he wouldn't get credited back for the purchase even though I secured the transaction with MY OWN CREDIT CARD.

    2. Which side of the 171435-002 idler roll is for .030?
    3. Which side of the 171435-002 idler roll is for .035?

If the 171435-001 & -002 drive rolls are for .023/.030/.030, then I'll take one set back to Linweld, Sioux City, IA & I want assured that I'll get my credit card credited back. Next I want to know which side is for which wire size.

If I may be so bold - Instead of telling me something dumb please call your engineering, marketing, and manufacturing and have them give us all the right answer. OK?

Sorry about the confusion, This is Hobart Expert Steve who is working from Rock's computer today as he is at the Weld show in Detroit. I will contact the parts department and get a breakdown of each of the two drive roll kits and we can either email back and forth or you can call 1-800-332-3281

MONONINDU........... HEY WERE LOOKING AT IT.........OUR PART NUMBERS ARE CORRECT WHAT WE SUPPLIED TO YOU..........THE DRAWING..........HOWEVER THIS IS AN OUT SOURCED ITEM FROM A UNIVERSAL MANUFACTURER.........WE WILL CONTACT THEM........ YOUR FORM OF PAYMENT WAS YOUR CHOICE AND I CAN'T HELP YOU OUT MUCH THERE............. HOWEVER WHEN THE DRIVE ROLL SAYS .030 ON THE OUTSIDE AND YOUR LOOKING AT IT THAT INDICATES THE INSIDE GROOVE IS FOR .030......... AND LIKE WISE WHEN THE .035 SIDE IS OUT THAT INDICATES THE INSIDE GROVE IS .035............... THE REASON WE HAVE U AND V SHAPED AND KNURLED IS FOR DIFFERENT APPLICATIONS........... TYPICALLY THE "U" GROVE IS FOR SOFT WIRE AND THE "V" IS FOR HARD WIRE.................................NO ONE IS BEING DUMB........NOR ARE WE BEING FACHIOUS.................ENGINEERING, MARKETING, AND VICE PRESIDENTS ARE WATCHING AND OBSERVING......... IF YOU NEED A FURTHER EXPLINATION I CAN PROVIDE, IF YOU WANT TO TALK YOU HAVE A NUMBER THAT MY "BUD" SUPPLIED. HIS NAME IS STEVE MINE IS ROCK WE ARE HERE TO ASSIST............. HOW ELSE CAN I HELP YOU......................SIR...................... .....ROCK. [email protected] SIR YOU ALSO HAVE MY E-MAIL ADDRESS ................

Please stop typing in CAPITAL LETTERS TO ME. I CAN HEAR YOU JUST FINE.

Now, the local provider - Linweld - required pre-payment on these parts as they're 'special order'. Since these guys represent Miller, and there seems to be an obvious error here, I expected support from Miller on the ability to return the parts since they're seem to be incorrect. But I'll take care of it myself if/when I get the correct information, thanks.

I know how to read drive rolls and I know all about the gooves. Needless to say, based on the lesson IT'S PRETTY hard to figure out which side is correct when BOTH SIDES of the roll are marked for 3 different wire sizes - no matter whether rolls is cut for the grooves are 'U' or 'V'. Which brings up another issue with the supposed .024 roll being part numbered for hardware and cut for soft wire.

Hey, I've got an idea... just tell me that the out sourcer made a mistake in marking the rolls. Then tell me to make a 'X' on one side. Then tell me that the side with the 'X' is for .030 and the other side is for .035, and what I've got is what was advertized and ordered. Then we can change the story on the use of 'V' groove vs. 'U' groove for .023 wire, and I'll buy that too. Problem solved, everyone happy, back to coffee, local Miller representative off the hook, out sourcer issue non-existant, no need to change dies or inspect product, part numbers square, all things A-OK.

            Monindou,

If you had spent any time here, you would know that Rock always types like that. This isn't a place to come and gripe, but a place to learn. If you have a problem with YOUR distributor, take it up with YOUR distributor.

              Monindou

I just wanted to back up what Arbo stated. Since I have been on this site Rock has always been nothing but helpful and patient with everyone. There is no need for your attitude here. All we want is to learn & get our problems solved in a civil manner

I'm kinda new here...but the way I look at Rock's ALL CAPS is hopefully the way others look at my beard...

IT'S JUST THE WAY I [we] AM [are]...

I'm not shaving my beard...and my guess is that Rock is not changing his typing style. Just being ourselves...If I can take the liberty to speak for Rock...

Hope it gets corrected to your satisfaction. Remember you can dispute the bill with your credit card company. Sounds like the independent supplier messed up. Seems to me you should be able to mail them back to Miller/Hobart to Rock's attention, get your account credited and then rock or one of his co workers can figure out what went wrong and fix it so it doesn't happen again.

I'll agree it sounds like your local distributor is not geared to customer satisfaction/service. But that's a different problem. Give rock and his team a chance before you just start bashing everyone.

MONINDOU........HERE IS WHAT WE'VE FOUND OUT........ WHEN THE TRANSITION HAPPENED BETWEEN ITW AND THE FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION.......... BECAUSE THERMAL ARC USED MORE OF THE DRIVE ROLLS THAN WE DID THAT RESPONSABILITY WENT TO THEM,.............HOWEVER WE USED THE SAME FEED ROLLS ON THE BETA MIGS BUT TO A GREATLY REDUCED AMOUNT......SO WHEN THERMAL ARC WANTED A .024 DRIVE ROLL UPGRADED TO COVER .030 AS WELL AS .035 THE OUTSIDE SUPPLIER HANDLED IT. OF COURSE WE WERE NEVER INFORMED OF THE CHANGE BECAUSE WE ONLY USE (THIS IS A GUESS) SAY MAYBE 250 SETS A YEAR............... QUITE FRANKLY........... Your the first that said anything about it. I talked to Thermal Arc today and they changed the arrangement in about 1996 or 1997. In otherwards they made the change ................... I do not know why they would want .024 thru .035 on both side. They were under no obligation to even respond to me but it was courtious........... So here is the answer to your question if you need more info please respond. ......Now I would like to say something about my caps........Caps are a way of business.......Look at it like this if you see my All Caps and it bothers you please just pass over it . You are under no obligation to read it.............However I am a site manager and it should not be hard to tell who I am. I have been doing this for more than 5 years...........and am quite active with this site.............I always try and solve the problem or the issue. Now my question to you is what would you like me to do for you concerning this matter.............Regards.....................ROC K... [email protected] [email protected]

I ordered drive rolls from Thermal-arc for my 2210 Hobart, and I did not notice any big deal about the markings.I alway just look at the grooves to tell which size is bigger or smaller. To me that does not really seem like brain surgery, which I do Know a little about.

On a side note the Hobart, now Thermal-arc drive rolls are some of the most interesting ones out there as far as types or styles.
