  • MM 185 liner?

Rock,I sold my MM 185 to the welding store, ard I bought a liner for it just before I made the deal.Anyway it does not fit, here is some info.
    MM-185 s/n KJ288620
    M-15 gun
    New liner #194011 (.030-035)
    It says it replaces 172-258
This is out of the 2003 welding componants & parts guide pg #59

Anyway the new liner does not fit the gun on the 185.It has a different back fitting on the new liner. The old one doe not have threads, and is larger in size. When you put the new one into the gun it is loose.Did somebody over look the older guns when they came up with the new liner style? The new liner say it fits all guns.I think the MM-185 is a 1988 model.

I thought I would try to make that welding machine weld nice for the next owner,so you can keep your good name.See I look out for you guys.

Also for Dan,I looked over a new 210 that was not smashed up,and on the front there is way more metal than I thought. When they are in one piece it kind of changes the way you look at things. It looks much better than I thought it did. It's fine, because it has steel backing up the plastic.

One last point on the other machine I looked at,the new SD 180 tig with the running gear.It looked much better than the Lincoln 175 tig,and even with the running gear it was cheaper than the Lincoln. The only thing I did not like is the ac/dc+/dc- switch. There is no detent for the ac position, and you just kind of guess if its in the right spot.It was pretty hard to turn, and I think you guys are going to replace some plastic handles on warranty. After the warranty is up though you should make money on them.

SCOTTV.........DON'T BE FECHIOUS ON THE PLASTIC HANDLE........ I'M LOOKING AT A LINCOLN EQUIVALENT ALSO PLASTIC....... THEY ARE ACTUALLY VERY GOOD PLASTIC WITH EXCELLENT RESILANT CAPACITY OR WE WOULDN'T USE THEM.,...........

ALSO ON THE GUN DIDN'T YOU SAY YOU REPLACED IT WITH A DIFFERENT GUN TO YOUR LIKEING.................?..... I CAN TELL YOU WHAT THE ORIGINAL GUN WAS THAT CAME WITH THE MACHINE WHEN IT WAS NEW. BUT YOU PURCHASED A USED MACHINE WITHOUT KNOWING FOR SURE WHAT THE GUN WAS......... HOWEVER I WILL CHECK AND SEE WHAT GUN COME WITH THE UNIT AND THE LINER........................ROCK................. ....

      MM 185 liner

      Scott,
The 194011 liner you have can be used in the older style M-15 gun. I realize it doesn't fit as tight as the old style liner but it was tested and works fine. Install it just as you would the old style liner. By the way the MM185 you have was built 12-21-98.

Kevin,it sure is loose, and it looks like gas will leak out? It kind of looks like if you put a bigger o ring over the back of it it might seal.I will put it in the gun,and test for leaks, but I never seen something that loose not leak.Rock I tried my Lincoln 100 L gun with a Tweeco adapter on the 185 to see why the 185 was not welding right. Then I put the factory gun back on.I was there when my friend bought it new,so I know which gun came on that machine.Rock, on the sd 180 maybe the handle will hold up,but turning it is tight,so it must loosen up some, because it's a real strain to turn at the ac spot.I wasn't the only person there to think the same thing.

            gas leakage

            Scott,
You will always get a little gas leakage out the back end of a mig gun. A small amount of gas will flow through the liner windings and then out the back end. When we looked at making this change we tested the new liner in the old style guns and had no gas coverage issues.

SCOTT.........TALKED TO KURT AT TIG..........IN COMPARISON TO A THUNDERBOLT IT IS ONLY SLIGHTLY HARDER TO TURN....... IT SLIDES IN BETWEEN COPPER BLADES IN THE SWITCH....... THE OTHER TIG GUYS AND I PLAYED PHONE TAG FOR MORE THAN AN HOUR TRYING TO CATCH EACH OTHER.............WERE KINDA BUSY.....HOPE THIS ANSWERS YOUR QUESTION..........ROCK.......

Thanks Kevin,I will just have them stick it in,and see what happens.I am going to check my other feeders to compare the gas loss between the different styles. Rock,I could tell it was sliding like you say,but this one is tight, and maybe it has to be, for a good contact?I guess it one more reason to like inverters.Just flip a little micro switch.
