I know this off subject, but i need some advice on purchasing a generator. Looking for 3500 to 5000 watt running output. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you are looking for a welder/generator, check any of the three; Miller, Hobart or Lincoln. If you only want a gen set, stay away from the Coleman and other cheapo sets sold at Lowes, Home Depot, etc., and go with a Honda, Onan or other name brand unit. Costs more up front but one way or another, gen sets are expensive.

Having just shut down my 1952 ONAN after 75 hours of runb time, there are a couple things I'll say on the subject of generators.
First, and most important in my mind, since you'll be running long hours, buy a machine that produces electricity at 1800 RPM. 3600 RPM machines require more maintainence, and wear out faster.
Secondly, before you size the machine, get an amprobe and find out what your real need is. I hooked up a 70 kva machine, PTO driven for a fellow this January, who only draws 20 amps on each leg with everything he owns running.
Third, make sure the machine you buy is frequency stable. A lot of the new heating equipment is very sensitive to frequency, and safetys will prevent oil burners from operating on anything above 64 or below 55hz. I learned that the hard way a year back.
