  • Need self-darkening AND corrective lens

When I brought my Power MIG 200 I got the cheapo self-darkening Lincoln branded helmet. It doesn't have any adjustable shade capability and I now see that was a mistake The arc often is so bright that I don't see any detail Also my half frame glasses which I need for close work are flopping and fogging-up I search the site and checked out Speedglas, Jackson, Hobart helmet. I liked the Speedglas for the exhaust ports. The only one that mentioned anything about correcting for refractive error was the XLix http://www.cyberweld.com/hobhoodxlixb.html They mentioned a"Magnifier lens holder"; what's the deal on corrective lens built into the helmet

It sounds like the hood is not darkening at all. Normally a single shade autodarkening hood is shade #10, which won't be so bright that you can't see detail, if it's is working.

It's not for corrective lenses, but a diopter magnifier. They come in 1.00, 1.50, 1.75, 2.00 and so on. I use a 1.50 in my heliarc hood. in my Speedglas I don't use one. My tri focals are good enough.

I don't know Rocky That's like calling milk bovine extract
Anyway, are these 'diopter magnifiers' readily available for trial and error fitting. The distance between your eyeball and the mounting in the helmet would be critical. Does "Weld-It" make these for their helmets, for example ?

I've got a SpeedGlass hood. I put a 1.5 diopter in it (thanks to a tip I read here a few weeks ago written by Rocky!). It made a significant difference for me and my old eyes. I just taped it inside the hood with some clear Scoth tape.

Did you notice that the thread you replied to was three and a half years old?

I didn't notice until now. Island has only 3 posts.
He spent 2 of them on this thread.
I wonder if his remaining post has any useful value or comment.
                          Probably not.
