This past week I had a customer rent a Lincoln High Freq Box. He was using it with a Miller Bobcat 225. I jumped out the box since I could not use a control cord. This allows the box to operate by the on/off switch. I have been doing this for many years and never had any problems. The customer asked if the HF could do any damage to the welder when he was not welding. I told him that I had not experienced any problems in better than twenty years of doing this. What about the newer welders with all the high tech circuit boards? I am worried about inverters with all the high dollar boards in them.
XMT 300CC/CV (yes it still works)
Bobcat 225, Hobart Hefty CC/CV wire feeder, Profax spool gun,Victor & Smith O/A, Lincoln Tombstone(sold), Airco HF box (old Miller) MM175, IR 4KW gen set,all paid for, all work. My newest addition MM130 salvaged from a Kitrina flood area. Cleaned up and works great. . Just added a Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC, total cost to repair both less than $200.00, they both work great...another Katrina cast off.

HI FRANK........... I THINK THE BEST WAY TO EXPLAIN A HF BOX IS LIKE THIS.........WE USE A TRANSFORMER TO TAKE 115 VOLTS (TYPICALLY) ON THE INPUT SIDE AND STEP IT UP TO 3000 VOLTS OUTPUT OR IN SOME INSTANCES 6000 VOLTS........ THIS STEP UP TRANSFORMER ALLOWS THE ARC TO JUMP WHEN IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO THE METAL;............. HOWEVER JUMPING OUT THE CONTACTOR AND CONTROLING IT WITH THE ON/OFF SWITCH MEANS THE HF COMES ON AS SOON AS THE MACHINE IS TURNED ON.......... COULD INITIATE AN ARC OR DEPENDING ON WHEN IT COMES ON IN THE SINE WAVE COULD CAUSE HF (3000 TO 6000 VOLTS) TO CREEP BACK INTO THE POWER SUPPLY......... THIS WOULD BE A PROBLEM IN ANY MACHINE IF THE CORRECT FILTRATION WAS NOT USED ON THE OUTPUT STUDS (+/-)....... I KNOW THIS IS SHORT BUT I WOULD INSTALL CORRECT LEAD FROM THE CONTROLLER.................SHALL WE SEE WHAT EVERYONE ELSE HAS TO SAY................ENJOY THE SITE AND BE SAFE NOW.............ROCK..[email protected]
