Who's used the Maxstar 140 STR?

    Who's used the Maxstar 140 STR?

    I am strongly considering the Miller Maxstar 140STR with Stick and TIG leads for my home shop. I should be able to run 3/32 7018 or 6010 stick even on 120 Volt power. It is portable enough that I can take it on 4wd trips and do repairs at the cabin.

    Who besides (and including) Dan has actually used one of these units and can comment on the stick and TIG capabilities?

    I have one, it is not the str which is the remote option. I bought mine before that was an option. Other than that it is the same machine. It is great in every way. I often use 7014 on steel and stoody versa alloy on things I am not sure of. Both 3/32 It welds like a dream. Also for tig welding it is as smooth as a bell. I just made a few pigtales so I can plug it in to different outlets. If you look at the duty cycles they are impressive for a 10 pound machine. I would give the machine an A for what it can be used for. I like you always take mine take mine to the mountians. Chub

      Hey,Chub If I don't get my Mk back you might have me outgunned as far as welding machines go.

      How does is the maxstar compare to the dynastys dc arc?

        Thanks Chub! I haven't learned to TIG yet, but although I am a little concerned about the hand control, it is probably better than not having the ability to vary current real time. And I'm pretty sure, given the previous thread, that it wouldn't take much to make a foot control that plugs in place of the hand control.

          Hi guys,I think if you start with hand control you will have no problem with it. I prefer foot only because thats what I started with. You may like the hand better. There are some cases where hand control is great like out of position,under cars ect. I would have got the remote if they would have offered it but I was one year to early. However it has never really been a problem the way it is. I think you will really like the machine if you get it. Scott as far as the arc goes its hard to compare because with the Dynasty I have been using the pulser most of the time just trying to get the feel for the machine. I have welded some .020 s/s banding the other day with 3/32 tungsten at 9 amps perfectly stable. When I have used the Dynasty just straight tig on s/s it is simillar, but the when the Dynasty's arc starts it is like it comes from nowhere it is so smooth it is like it just appears. I would have to say I like the Dynastys arc better, but it may just be the difference from lift arc and impulse arc. After there started I would say in respective ranges they are simillar.Good luck whatever you get Bill ,Just make sure you dont want to do alum before you buy the 140. You can do alum with that machine but I am not sure its worth it. mabie in a pinch.Chub

              The technical details of adding a foot pedal don't seem too challenging. Nonetheless, I will certainly contact you and/or Robin prior to incorpoating the design change...

              I stopped by my local Miller dealer yesterday to ask about the reconditioned Maxstar 140STR. I told them that Miller Customer Service had told me to ask them about reconditioned machines, and they looked at me like I was an alien... They had never heard of it, and bragged how they don't sell used machines...

              I did get a quotation for a new machine from them. I guess the question is why I should pay over 15% more to buy from them than from an internet supplier. They don't have it in stock... "We used to have one in stock..." All this while I am wearing a logo shirt from the largest employer in Florida, and probably their largest account in Central Florida...

                Oh yeah, and BOZO number 2 behind the counter pipes up and tells me what a great machine it is because it comes with the Stinger, the TIG torch, and the remote thumb control.

                And I am thinking, YEAH... and STR means what else??? So those of you (like Scott V) that swear by the value of the local distributor... I envy you, because I have perceived no added value from my local distributors... Just more idiots in the food chain that raise the price!

                  Bill C, dealers like that are what keeps the internet dealers in business. Try this guy. A friend of mine has bought two welders from him and says the service and prices are top notch.
