Tungsten Types?

So, what is the difference between Thoriated and Lanthanated tungstens? I've been welding with a Tigmate for about two years and as far as I know I've always used either 2% or pure thoriated. Maybe I'm just out of it, but just untill just a few weeks ago I had never heard of Lanthanated tungsten.
