  • 6011 Vertical fillet

This is a 3/16" hot rolled steel plate vertical fillet weld. Machine: Miller (what else?) 304 CC, 50 amps 3/32" E6011 rod, DCEN. It's been a long time since I've used that rod. I MIG just about everything. Someone asked what should a vertical weld using various rods look like. This is about the best I can do, not having used the rod in awhile. It has been said that a weldors peak is about 35 years old. I'm way past that, I'm afraid.

A butt weld is entirely different. You need to gap it, and keyhole your way to the top. There should be no edges of the plate to be seen on the back. It should look like just like the front side, only narrower.

Rocky, This weld looks as good as I have seen for quite a while.I am like you I don't use the stick much any more and when I do I have to do some practice runs first. Good job for someone over 35.

I found a down side to being able to post pictures....Now I KNOW my welds look like chewing gum.

It really is great having pictures to be able to see what different welds should look like and different projects people have done. I hope more of the professionals here will post pictures so us novices can get ideas and be able to see what we should be striving for as far as welds go.

        Thanks Rocky.

              Rocky:
The vertical up weld you did with the 6011...Did you first run a stringer bead? What type of weave did you do with that weld in the picture? Box...Whip? I gotta say Rocky..It sure looks sweet!
              Thanks

It was a small box weave with a whip, more like an inverted 'T'.

As a matter of fact, I did run it straight, I had been switching polarity earlier on another job and my cables got mixed up. It should have been on reverse.
