DC TIG Aluminum?

I've got a nice multiprocess ThermalArc 400 GMS at work. I'm fair at Stick welding, but want to try my hand at TIG. The problem is the ThermalArc is DC only and I'ld like to TIG a couple of aluminum projects (nothing structural). Is it possible to TIG aluminum with DC? Would a frequency box help?

You can TIG weld aluminum with DC straight polarity using Helium. It welds nicely on 3/8" and above. This process is used on heavy stuff, mostly. Do not use argon.

Helium? Geeze I just spent money on a bottle of pure Argon for the MIG. Care to elaborate, or anyone else have there .02?

Go ahead a use the argon...you need to see what it does on straight polarity...then report back to us.

BTW, "Sparky" is the name of the Hobart Logo guy doing the overhead welding sittin' on a H beam.

Sparky, as Rocky said you can tig aluminum on DC. You will be very unhappy with the results if you are not doing thick, brand new, very clean aluminum. Just my opinion.

Thanks for the replies, guys. If I can borrow some Helium I might give it a try, but it's not on the front burner right now.
