  • What other metals can be tig welded to titanium?

Can alloy steels be tig welded to titanium? My applications is to attach a stainless steel flange nut to a .040 sheet of commercially pure ti. I want to screw a brass 3/8" lp gas nipple into the sheet of for some medium pressure situations. I might have to find a titanium nut for that, but would perfer to use stainless steel.

    TIA,

Titanium cannot be welded to most other metals due to the formation of embrittling compounds that can lead to cracking. You'd have a real witches' brew in that weld puddle! Suggest you figure out some mechanical way to make that assembly.

I'll second what art says..ti can't be welded to steel of any kind. Your fittings will have to be ti also. or make mechanical connections, somehow.

I forgot one thing which is interesting but not too useful at present - something I learned some years ago when developing and teaching Shuttle flight crew procedures at the Johnson Space Center, Houston. Totally dissimilar metals can be welded in a zero g environment, at least in theory. That implies that some weird but maybe very unique alloys, with properties totally unknown on this planet, could be created in a space manufacturing environment. Also, amazing crystals for integrated circuits, etc. can be grown in zero g.

I also used to pilot an NKC-135 used for zero g testing, tail No 53129, also known as the 'Vomit Comet'. With the right entry procedure I could get about 90 seconds max of weightless pushing over into a parabolic type arc. To my knowledge, metal joining experiments were never conducted on this bird. AC power was sometimes a problem. We frequently lost all AC power (and pitch trim) because the oil would float to the top of the constant speed drives under zero g, tripping the generators. Then on the downhill, it would be a scramble to get at least one generator back on line to regain pitch trim - that yoke got pretty heavy.

Zero g welding...man, that sends the imagination into a tailspin! I can picture globs of molten metal flying ever which-a-way! Scary!

Don't seem like it would be a whole lot different than working next to you while yer doin that little singsong routine of yours.
Way I heard tell, just bein within 100 feet of you drivin that contraption of yours around the plant is a life latering event.

A "life-latering event"? Lol, Isn't that just about what we're doing these days anyway? By the time I shove myself out of bed & get moving around most mornings I reflect upon how much latered things feel most of the time.
