    I keep getting pin holes in the slag. I am using SMAW, 6013 3/32 rod, 65 amps. The metal is sheet, just a hair over 3/32 thick.
    Is pin holes in the slag indictive of poristy? I dont see any holes in the welds. I cleaned the metal with rubbing alcohol to get the oil off.

    i may be wrong, but what i believe you are seeing is typical of that electrode.
    6013 has a rutile coating which is primarily titania dioxide. as this burns in the welding arc the by-product of combustion is carbon dioxide--the reactive gas that enhances the welding of steel. the excess CO2 will get trapped on the surface of the weld and the slag covering it. some of the CO2 tends to outgas before the slag solidifies and that's why you see that occur in the 6013.
    if the weld appears to have no surface porosity i doubt if you have any hydorgen entrapment sub-surface, or any other discontinuities in the weld.

      Chip, you talk like my instructor when I was in Navy weld school, It sounds like you were paying attention. ****, I don't know a rutile from a roof tile . Seriously though, this is one of the atributes of 6013, a very fluid flux to allow out-gassing

        ya caught me. i'm getting ready for class as i write this. i like roof tile-sort of looks like it when it pops off. chip.
