Contact Century for help. If they don't have any ideas, try a lock nut with a nylon insert. It should holf the setting without tightening. I had the same problem on a Seelye welder that copied a lot of design from Century. Nice cart. Show us the cart loaded with welder!

Mine's a Century (Sears brand), and it had a wimpy spring on it that holds the tension. It seems to work, though.

Nice Legs, and the cart looks good too.

What machine do you have, is it the one that the wire drops in from the top, or does it load from the side?

VIPP...............WELCOME ABOARD............. NICE CART.......... I THINK I WOULD TRY THE NYLON NUT........... WHEN PROPER TENSION IS APPLIED THRU THE NUT TO THE SPRING THIS SHOULD NOT LOOSEN OR GET TIGHT ON YOU................. THE NYLON WILL LOCK IT INTO A USEABLE POSITION.................. WELCOME TO THE FORUM..............AND BY THE WAY I CAN'T SPELL EITHER..... WELL I ACTUALLY CAN I JUST LOOK AT THE KEY BOARD WHEN I TYPE..... TERRABLE HABIT....................... NO ONE HAS KICKED ME OFF.
I ALWAYS LIKE TO ASK HOW YOU FOUND THE SITE....... ALL OF THE SECRET AGENTS ONBOARD LIKE TO KNOW ALSO.......... REGARDS................AND BE SAFE.................ROCK...........

Some MIG welders use washer with D shape center hole between wire reel and spring to prevent your problem of spool retaining nut tightening as reel turns. The washer fits on shaft with D shape end.

i dont have a screw that is D shaped thar for it would not help to have a washer that is D shaped but i see your point were could i find one of those D shapped screw and washers if you can let me know i may try that i think it would look more like it belongs thar

Buy HH135 or HH175 complete with that feature.

Easy build that feature into your welder. Should have the needed tools. That feature is probably covered by someones patent.

Problem with reel tightening or loosening retaining nut is often caused by paper label. Use different brand wire with paper label on other side or remove label from center area to cure problem.
