  • welding titanium CP filler rod

any thoughts in general about welding various grades of titanium using commercially pure wire for fill rod?

I really hate cutting my own since it usually comes out less than perfect

As a certified Titanium weldor, our practice has never allowed us to use any other filler but what matched the base metal. I don't know what would happen if you used CP on, say, 6Al 4v and such. Titanium is funny stuff....I wouldn't deviate on the filler.

      .

well, I'm certain you are correct but sometimes I've wondered if a fine uniform bead of CP would be better than either a strictly fusion joint or a very un-uniform joint due to my spastic cut fill rod and offensive filler manipulating hand

I'm not talking about anything structural at all but I think I will see about "machining" some uniform fill rod until I can spring for the spendy stuff

Funny stuff for sure but some of the nicest stuff to weld I've ever fooled with........ have you ever found anything that welded nicer?

oh I'm very keen to learn how to weld Ti.

any info would be much appreciated.

I have two 7/8 x .060 wall tubes here of cp Ti. I'd like to weld them (stacked together) like a double barrel. they are about a 10" long.

it must look nice and be straight when I'm done

can I do it reaching down into a argon filled cardboard box?about the size of a shoebox?

        thanks

          .

it wets very quick and flows like silk although I've never done and CP

          I wouldn't even bother with a shoebox.......

I'd use an aluminum foil "box" so as to require very little argon......but be sure and supply a ground to the tubes. If you just lay the foil wrapped item on your welding table....... it will arc thru the foil and then you will need to have an argon purge flowing while you weld

Yes, we have se up small table-top purge chambers and they work well...just remember to keep the part in in the argon until it cools.

You don't want grey or blue color. Yellow is ok but still not preferred.

                    .

I'll assume that like stainless the best and preferred weld leaves the molten metal very bright with no color at all. I was asking how cool is cool before the welded pieces are removed from the inert atmoshpere. I typically do not wear gloves when I weld and if I can pick it up to remove it, I've always thought it was cool enough to expose to the atmoshpere...... but that is far from room temp.

I've done some thin ti stuff that requires no stitch work and flows as smooth as poured Gentleman Jack....... I thought I was using too much heat and indeed it can be welded slower with less heat but require stitching....... but so far...... none of my smooth welds have failed.

Is a totally smooth weld in Ti ever acceptable? Perfect bright shiny and colorless.....

this is the first Ti project I did with bandsaw cut filler....... there is no blue where that reflection falls and I'll see if I can find some recent pix. I'm totally green, been tigging part time for less than a year, never any formal welding instruction, so be easy on me and by the way......... do you know anything about my three phase Hoboart Cyber Wave S 110?

Here is some stainless I did about three or four months ago and I was really proud of them at the time but this last batch almost has me ashamed of them. If I could consistently run beads like yourself........ I'd hide this stuff I'm doing now

not text book perfect by a long shot but over engineered enough to do the job three times, the thin collar was some sloppy freehand fusion before I got the bright idea of rotating the stuff in a three jaw placed on my welding table
