  • Rod for cast?

What rod should I use to weld on cast iron with my AC buzz box? I have an old bench vise that needs repair as well and old hand water pump my wife wants for lawn decoration.

    Thanks

I use a nyrod 99 for cast-iron, but on DC now will it also run on AC I am not sure, you could call and ask welding supply store. But maybe someone else will add some info here.

I've always had good luck with Certanium 889, but any Ni-rod will do. Preheat, while good is not as important as wrapping up the part in Kaowool or fire blanket or Oildry compound and letting it cool slowly.

I looked on my box of Nyrod today and it says DC or AC. Like Rocky said pre heat is very important along with a slow cool down and when welding run small stringers try not to weave weld causing excess heat into base metal. After each passpeen weld area ( chipper will peen actually when knocking off slag )

I bet it says AC/DC I think nickel runs way better on AC.
